Flying Wire
I am building a 40 sized Tiger Moth and would like to know what to use for flying wire. I would prefer something that can be crimped versus soldered.
Thanks Pete |
Flying Wire
The fishing tackle stores sell a stainless steel leader that is plastic covered, along with "lead"?? ferrules for crimping. Works fine.

Flying Wire
Ive seen some bipes use elastic cord instead of wire. No need for tuning, no need to fiddle with turnbuckles & etc.. just stretch and hook into position!

Flying Wire
On my .75 sized Sopwith Pup I used tennis racket nylon string. I glued nylon clevises on both ends with cyano and used textil dye to get right colour. It looks really good - click here for picture

You can use just about any string or thrread of the correct size. (#8 builders twine would be a bit oversize... ) I've used Fishing line or stranded steel "Control Line" flying wire.
The Tiger's flying wire rigging pattern can be done in one continuous string, with a rubber band tensioner at the LE of the lower wing inside the fuselage, or in the false fuel tank in/on the upper wing. Because of this, if you plan ahead you can make things quite easy on yourself for hooking the wires up at the field. (for a sport scale plane, competition scale needs the turnbuckles and other details...) Eye bolts on the upper wings, and J hooks on the lower would allow quick connection. A couple of rubber bands and some Christmas ornament type hooks will hold the disconnected wires wrapped over the upper wing and prevent tangling when the plane is dissasembled for transport.. |
