scale looking cabane struts
 

I am looking for info on how to attach the cabane struts to the top and bottom wings! What types of brackets are used? Where can i get them? Thanks for the help!The plane is a 1/4 scale waco biplane. stan

I have had good luck using aluminum "L" stock from Lowe's or Home Depot.  I just cut the size I need and mount it to the wing using a piece of hard wood as a base plate. Drill the strut attach holes after squaring every thing and setting the wing incidence angles.  Never had one fail.

Which Waco? Different models used different methods to attach the center section to the cabane struts. The same goes for the interplane struts. If you specify which model, I may have some pictures of the full size that I can post.

I through bolt the brackets to both sides of the Spars.  When the brackets are shaped and drilled, then the Interplane struts, and Cabane struts will be captured by the brackets, and the through bolts.

Send me a PM, It would be better to send you a CD with the photos than to try and post all them here. I will be at Creve Cour Airport this weekend and will get some better close ups of the mountings. On the ATO, ASO, CSO, CTO, QCF and UBF the lug that the strut mounts to is orientated fore and aft, the strut fits over it and is bolted from the side (span wise). On the YMF, UMF the lugs are bolted to the spar and extend out parallel, the strut end fits between and the bolt is fore and aft.

P1 - 1932 ATO NC 906H (typical on the above mentioned Wacos)
P2 - 1929 JYM NX 8550 (similar)
P3 - !987 Waco Classic YMF NC 14081 (totally differeent mounting at top, bottom similar)
P4 - 1940 QCF NC 12428. The single lug is the strut attachment point, the 2 parallel are for the wires

If you can find bicycle chain the proper size it works well for both the wing and the strut mount. Saves a lot of time making parts.

Here are the Cabane struts for my current Waco YMF build. They are made from thick wall Brass tubing, silver soldered (not the cheap stuff from the big box stores) to the wire cabanes, and the threaded bungs are silver soldered into the tubing. The tubing has been flattened to give a scale outline, and then the 10/32 bolts are blacksmithed to give a lug to bolt through. This allows very fine adjustments to be made to set the incidence of the top wing. The Interplane struts have a similar adjustment as well. Finally, the angle brace for the cabane is silver soldered into position, and the joint filed to shape. I have done this with brazing as well, but I have found that the silver solder is stronger.
