Comparative engine sounds

So what is your preference when it comes to "engine music?" Here are a few to choose from, of add one of your own! (Recommend you turn down the volume "at work" :D ) In some sense, this is completely irrelevant. I mean the purpose of the engine is to haul the model around, right? But somehow we can never stop talking about the "sweet sounds" while at the same time making fun of those silly electric noises! :)

And for real fun, try playing ALL the videos at the same time. You can imagine it's 12 o'clock high and you and the rest of the squadron are ready to take off on a mission! ;)

And, yes, there are some cool sounds out there for our electric brothers as well:

And the sound of a scale model of a Bentley BRII rotary:

When it comes to engine noises, Le Rhones can't be beat.

But in models, the best engine sound is definitely Moki radials.

How about some gas 4-strokes? Stihl, Honda, Briggs & Stratton, Subaru-Robin(Fuji) etc..

J
BTW the LeRhone is nice but the Gnome 160hp is a beast!

I've got a Stihl 4 stroke that my father and I are working on putting into my Pup. We just need to make a carburetor fixture to bring it away from the cowl. When it runs the sound is pretty amazing.

Sweet, sweet sounds, for sure! But I'd sure like to see something sweet like that in a flying model. Packing that whole cart-load of support equipment into a 1/4 scale model might not be so easy though! ;)

What engine type is that in the Hanriot?

RE: Comparative engine sounds

I think he has an OS 1.60 twin, which sounds to me, like a real plane more than most.
I would like to see them in planes too, but like it was said before, it is the engine that is attractive to those guys not the package airplane/engine. One tough pill to swallow for FAI scale guys is the noise rule; the planes have to be pretty quiet. Put one of those noisy rotaries in a plane and you would be DQed even though they score the sound of the planes to be scale like.

Here are two videos showing the different in sound of a Seidel running without and then with a collector ring. Without the ring you get the "blowing bubbles" sound near idle which is not so appealing. With the collector ring it's a very throaty, very mean sound:

Great. One MORE reason not to compete. [&o]
