The best way is to lay a coat of resin and fiberglass over it.
If you find that intimidating, try to get a hold of some model airplane tissue (silkspan).
Cut the pieces of tissue to fit and lay over the hull, Then laquer the hull, as you
lay down the laquer press and laquer the tissue over the hull.
After it dries sand out any wrinkles, and air bubbles that showed up, and laquer two or three more times.
If you want to patch any of the areas where the tissue sanded away, be sure to overlap at least 3/4 "
You can laquer and sand till the paper edges disappear, and the hull should finish out nicely.

i dont know about where to get that from, however I just had to patch a hull using epoxy, (arraldite), because its an adhesive it may be aged restricted sale so u may have to ask your dad to get some (or you mum). mix it up and plug any gaps.
filler could be used BUT you would need to paint over it as it is pourus

I buy silkspan at the local hobby shop that deals with model aircraft..
I think a sheet cost 75 cents.
You could use a heavy tissue paper from the craft store also.
For fiberglass cloth and resins...
maybe an auto store or boat repair shop.

RE: water proofing!!! does filler work??
The basic idea is to put a layer of something on the boat to keep water out (preferably on the outside, otherwise the hull absorbs water). If that layer is water proof, doesn't weigh a ton, and is sort of easy to find/use, and doesn't cost a fortune, that's good. Also helps if whatever that stuff is is transparent (if you want to see the wood). Sounds simple, doesn't it? Yeah, but... and you can fill in the rest.
You've probably already gotten the best advice above. This post is just to remind you of the basic idea. Now, make it happen.

RE: water proofing!!! does filler work??
A couple more bits of advice:
- DON'T use hard filler like auto body filler, or glues like epoxy... you want to fill up the low spots (and cracks, which should have a temporary backing behind them) with something as soft as the balsa wood, otherwise, you can never sand it all fair. Think of spackle compound, or special balsa filler from the hobby shop.
- THEN you can apply the waterproof layer. The best is glass-reinforced resin (fiberglass, but the emphasis is on REINFORCED). Sure you can seal a planked hull with just resin, or polyurethane or whatever... but the wood will eventually move around due to changes in humidty etc., and the seams WILL open up.
