RE: Midwest Boothbay Lobster Boat build!!
Check6,
Greetings, I have been reading this forum and have found this to be the best of any when it comes to assisting others thinking about building a R/C boat. I am new to this hobby, as I built a 60" cargo ship many years ago and gave it away after 80% completion because we were moving. I am going to purchase the "Midwest Lobster Boat" and restart my boat building fun.
I would like to ask for your guidance as to what tools, equipment that I should purchase in order to do the proper job, i.e., Work Top Mat, Ship builders X=acto Tool Kit, stick pins(type), etc. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.........
Don

RE: Midwest Boothbay Lobster Boat build!!
Greetings,
Fred, really enjoyed the tele conversation the other day. I am awaiting patiently (??) for my kit, so that I can get started.
Fred, thanks for the additional info. One question for you: you mentioned "HD" as a source for the materials, i.e., spring clamps & small bar clamps, I have not deciphered "HD" yet, in other words where is the best plae to purchase these items?
A beginners question to both: I am considering using the 'MEPS-III' system to power the boat. No one identifies the type of 'Speed Control'. Is it mechanical or electrical? and the write up states to mount 'speed control' to servo?????
Thanks again for the assistance. I expect that once I get started I will have additional questions and hope to continue to be able to gain that additional expertise from modelers like yourselfs...................

RE: Midwest Boothbay Lobster Boat build!!
Larry,
Sorry for not responding sooner. I received the motor the other day, THANKS again, the same day I received my boat kit. I have been busy repairing a couple of laptop PC's for a fellow Church member who plans on giving them to their Grandkids. Hopefully I can get started the first of the week and become totally immersed in building, forget what that ring-a-ling for a phone sounds like.....Don

RE: Midwest Boothbay Lobster Boat build!!
Just came across this great thread. I have the glass ARR version Midwest offered in 04. I saw it on Ebayand madean offer, without thinking, that was accepted. Hence the name, Whim. All the details you see were added by me. Nice thing about 1/12 scale is that dollhouse miniatures are the right scale. The radar and the tub with lobsters came from a vitamin bottle .
The previous owner had put a rather heavy Pittman motor in it which moved it pretty good. But after seeing videoof some of those fast Maine boatsI wanted a little more speed so at the reccomendation of Harbor models I dropped a Speed 600 7.2 v motor in it. She gets up and moves now but the motor overheats. I have a MFATorpedo 500 motor I am going to try in the spring.
Anyhow heres a few pics of Whim.

RE: Midwest Boothbay Lobster Boat build!!
Thanks for the comments Fred. To bad you sold that beautiful build.
Blizzard, mine runs likeyours with the motor that is overheating. In fact that spray hits the crane and pulley and splashes into the cockpit. I put a keeper line on the pulley like I see on some of the real ones (to keep them from swinging)to try and keep it out of the spray.
I intend to do a road trip up to Cape Ann and then Coastal Maine next summer and will bring the boat with me to run in some of the harbors.

RE: Midwest Boothbay Lobster Boat build!!
Hi Sound Sailor,
I also have the fiberglass version. If you want some speed, try a Traxxas Titan 12 turn motor. Make sure you go to smaller props, as you go to faster motors. Otherwise the motors get hot and burn up. I currently run a Plettenberg 290/20/4 brushed motor in mine and an Octura X/31 prop with a 6-cell 4200 NiMh battery pack. It goes well.
I removed the black plastic plates from the forward cabin and opened the windows. This allows a lot of hot air to escape and I have never noticed any splash water getting inside.
I just love those great figurines you have! Where did you source them from?

RE: Midwest Boothbay Lobster Boat build!!
Thanks for all the info guys.
Tom, I see you are running cooling coils. I wanted to try and stay away from piercing the hull with an intake. I know it's not common but I have seen videos where it appeared the hose came loose and the boat sank. I bought my boat used so I don't know what prop is on it except it's a 3 blade brass. Original??
You can find the figures from this maker in the UK http://www.georgeturnermodels.com/in...&shop_cat_id=5 Not real cheap but excellent quality and very apropos with the slicker pants and all.
These powered boat are new to me as I have been RC sailing and have a couple of them. Now they are out numbered with my tug, lobstah boat and a Dumas Dauntless I bought needing a lot of work and power plants. Quite a fleet for a 78 year old widower huh? I did build and run a Dumas Chris Connie about 40 years ago when RC was very young(me also)and the reciever was a relay that did pulse control.Had a Pittman motor and lead acid battery. Trying to learn about these new fangled boats with ESC ,brushed and brushless motors, and so many different battery types.

RE: Midwest Boothbay Lobster Boat build!!
Guess we never tire of "boys" toys, huh. Gas is not the way to go in my area. Snobs complain about the noise and all my friends that have fast gas can't find places to run them. The last gas boatI had was a 23 foot straight shaft inboard fishing boat with a 6 cyl ford motor. My sailboats are a Laser, and a Nirvana.
I spent some time up your way during my working years at places such as Bedford. We also had friends in Rockport and went there often. I grew up not 50 feet from the waters of Long Island Sound in Connecticut. As a young'unI dug clams for ice cream money at 50 cents a peck.
Heres a video of Whim before I repowered her. Towards the end you can see her top speed? at that time.

Lots of places to run gas,but I'm switching to FE. I have a Fair wind and sea wind. I enjoy sailing, some times I shut down the TX and let it sail by it self.I'm like 10 min from Plymouth harbor, we have more than 365 ponds in town, one for every day I shure would like to find one of those glass hulls Larry

I was wondering if someone knows if you could put a bow thruster in the lobster boat.
