Drawing deck lines?
1 Attachment(s)
Hi all, just wondering what isthe best way to draw lines on the deck to simulate planking?? I'm fixing a yacht that my Dad made for me as a kidand he drew lines on the deck with a pencil, but it did'nt quite look authentic. So i've changed afew things and sanded the lines off and now i need to mark somenew onesto make it look right, i want the lines to follow the shape of the hull, not just straight planks like they were before. Any help will be great! Thanks heaps guys. Ps. photo attached if it helps. Cheers! </p> |
RE: Drawing deck lines?
Hi Rad,
Get some thin wood planks and start the planking process. In the end, it will look the best. -Rich. |
RE: Drawing deck lines?
I would have to agree with Rich, real wood with thin plastic strips to simulate caulk looks fantastic. You might want to consider a wood strip around the edge of the deck to tie everything together and give it a more finished look. If you want to take it to the extreme, instead of one wood strip, use several to take the planking up to the sides of the deck houses and go lengthwise in the center on the bow, stern and lowered middle area.

Another option would be to score, or emboss the wood that is already there.
Turn an Xacto blade backward and insert the blade into the handle/holder, then use the square mounting side of the Xacto to press lines into the existing wood deck. Premeasure the spacing, and be sure to use light pressure, and a straight edge. The "tool" will want to follow the grain of the wood, so heavy pressure and the wood grain will want to make crooked lines. So working slowly and carfully would be key to good results. [8D] |

i uses a wood burn tool just lay it out with the board width you want and use a straight edge to run the lines i scored it 2 x on each line

hey rad
how did it turn out? |
RE: Drawing deck lines?
Hi Rad,
I used a ball point pen with no ink. Apply slight pressure and do it a couple of times. You can control the depth and the pen slides easily on the wood. Check out my Boothbay Harbor build on in this forum. You will see the results. Screen name is Check6. Thanks, Fred |
