Hi there, I am not new to the hobby but am new to large scale warships, I'd really like to build up a 6-7' wwII heavy cruiser, battleship, destroyer etc. As long as their wwII, that's the era that I really prefer. Can somebody help me with suppliers of kits like this. I have had no luck finding anything. Please Help!

Please give Tim some information. I'm a scale airplane guy, but I offered to help him when gets going on this project. This looks like fun, to me!!!

Thanks Tom, maybe I can find a carrier to land one of those airplanes on. Although Germany never had a carrier! Oh well, maybe we can land that stinson on the deck.

Most "large scale" projects are scratch built.
Not to hard for a couple of experienced plane junkies I would imagine.;)

is one of the best resources for ship plans.
Most of our heavy cruisers at 1-72nd scale come out around 8-9 feet long.
Once you have decided on a scale, which ship, and have your plan set.
You just need to start hacking plywood.

If you need direction in the process holler some more.

Floating dry dock...............Aye. I have been there and looked things over. I was looking last night and found a place called www.loyalhannadockyard.com/MLHeader.htm does anybody know how their stuff is. I found a fletcher class destroyer and a german destroyer, among other things. Both looked pretty good. Smaller than what I was origianlly looking at but that's ok for a first warship project. Their glass hulls, and sounds like their complete but I wonder about quality. It sounds like they carry different manufactures kits as well but I see no brand names on anything. This is the only source I have found for anything that I would even consider doing. I have considered scratch building but I wanted to start out with a kit first..............that may change!

WOW, I guess those are big enough, I'll need to pick up a trailer to launch one I think. They certainly are impressive! Actually I picked up a deans marine narvick class german destroyer. The kit looks great, very complete. Tomorrow I'm off to Toledo for the big show. I hope they have some good warships on display. I want photo's! Ram and mack products will get a few bucks from me.

those sure are incredible models. Do you know if their only for display or rc? I'm going to take a guess and say that's an iowa class, am I right? You can send me all the pics of that one you want.

Well I sail regularly with 8 foot heavy cruisers, but at least once a year a 1-72nd Bismark shows up on the pond. Mine and the other destroyer measure about 56 inches. These ships are all built to the same scale.
It's just a matter of cutting the plywood.;)
(However I just sold my Light cruiser, as I felt 6'-6" was too big and heavy to move around.)

UMI, in these mock combats are you actually shooting something at each other? I know they have combat "bb" guns and I'm sure your not shooting bb's at these models but all of these models look "scarred" or is that just weathering? Forgive me for seeming so uneducated here. This is actually the first time I've really seen warship models like these. I live in Traverse City Mi. and being surrounded by water like I am it's amazing to me that I'm the only person in this town who seems to have interest in boats. Everyone else races cars or is a flyboy. I guess I won't have any problem finding somebody to drop a skip bomb on me.

I will go ahead and post all that I have over the next few days........dang slow dial-up connection!

I don't have any details on the models as I am not into boating; but I admire a good model! Most of the models had cut-away hulls on the other side which shows the interior! So they weren't RC. Oh, yes, now I remember the carrier is a model of the Lexington.

You are correct, we are not shooting bb's. We are shooting 3-16" and 1-4" ball bearings. The "scarring" you see are all holes in the hull. We have three people in Wisconsin that fight boats. You may be able to get help there if you feel the need to build big, and then decide there is a need to enter into combat. ;)

I have looked up websites on model warship combat but those boats were nowhere near as nice as what your shooting up. Can I assume that you are also sinking these ships or do you have flotation to prevent that. I think I would have a hard time shooting up someone elses model that looks so nice, but then again If I were fired upon.....................revenge is a dish best served cold!
