Glassing my Dumas Donzi

Well, four days into the construction now and things are shaping up. I have most everything faired and ready for glass work. My question is what material is best to use for glassing. I plan to use 3/4 oz cloth. Since the hull is polyester resin, would it be ok to use epoxy for the glass work, especially at the hull joints? Any suggestions on technique would be appreciated too. I've done glass work many times before but only on full scale.

Thanks,

erry

Do you really need to glass the decks, etc? I am also building a Donzi and I plan to use a polyester resin to coat the wood, then sand and fill, then paint and clear coat.

Do you need to glass it? Probably not. As I have never done any glassing on a model before, this is an easy one to do as the surfaces are quite easy to do without any significant compound curves. One thing I will say though, is that glassing it prevents any future cracking in areas where the ply sheets are joined plus it makes the body work easier. JMO.

Another question. What type of paint did you use? I see that Petit doesn't make hobbypoxy anymore and the paint at the marine store is too expensive plus only available in quarts. A note from Pat (I believe) was to use semigloss or flat as the results keep it from looking like a toy.

As far as paint I use Krylon on all my boats/ships. it dries fast, is tough, many colors and comes in flat, semi gloss and gloss and is cheap!

I use the Krylon plastic coat spray paint. Then I use a catalyzed automotive clearcoat over the whole thing to make it hard and permanent.

Curious. Do you use the stuff in the rattle cans or the small conventional cans and reduced and put in a spray gun?

I use the spray cans.

I use the spray cans as well. As long as you are doing a basic paint job, they work just fine. You will need to use a clearcoat to seal however, as the spray can paint is susceptible to scratching and dings. Use a good primer and a good clear and you are good to go.
