Just wanted to add the Queen was steel and if you rent the movie you will see a lot of detail that needs to be added to the model.

Yea, I know......i like it mostly because of the steam engine on it:D

THe billing kit is the same size, so it would not be a big deal to move the engine over to the more scale hull..... But with a bit of work, im confident that the Wilesco one will look nice too when done ;)

Have you got any steam engines Kmot ?

I love all engines :)
I hope this little one rips up the local pond :D

Steam powered models are slow and steady until they run out of fuel. I hope you are not expecting a race boat from this engine? :)

hehe.......no, I was trying to be sarcastic:)
I am expecting a scale speed from it....time will tell.

How does a throttle work on these steam boats ?
I can see that this one does not have a throttle.
Can one be installed?

Can the whistle on it let out enough pressure, to actualy regulate the power/speed of this engine ?

What happens, if some seaweed gets tangled into the ptop, and it stops running.........but pressure keeps building up in the boiler ?
The safety valve looks very small, but i gues that it should prevent it from exploding ? ;)

Also.....would installing wood insulation like this one around the boiler increase performance?

RE: thinking of steam

I have the Midwest steam engines, both the little single in kit form that I built many years ago and the Heritage single cylinder that comes pre-built. However, I have the priviledge of seeing a few different steam engines in operation when my boating club mates bring theirs to the pond. :D

Nice... Looking forward to receiving mine :)

These cars are nice too :D

Has anyone here built a paddlewheeler with steam? Once I get through my warship phase & into my new house with a real workshop, that will be next year's project.

yes there is a member at my local club that has a side and raer wheel boat. i dont know the name of them. ill see him this week. ill be starting to get all my stuf together for my project.

I got the plug for the hull dun. its 40x12. next week ill poor the mold and lay the fiberglass. I also have decided to run two twin cylinder steam engines instead of one. ill probly order then next week allso. It’s hard to see the curves in the hull but I think from the pix I have its clows to a tow boat.

got the hull layed. 3 layers of 4 oz cloth. i still need to trim the top and lay some more glass inside. all the steam stuff should be hear next week. went to a pool party. some of the gys with there sail boats.

I got all the steam stuff Friday. I have one enjoin together an running. Ill put the other one together and start on the boiler.

Benny
Looks like a great engine, what pressure does it run at?also be sure to use steam oil to lubricate it and distilled water in your boiler. Best to do it right rather than find out later you plugged the boiler with chemicals from tap water and scored the cylinders with wrong oil.
best of luck Alex Wood

RE: thinking of steam

Yes im using steam oil. The max working psi for this enjoin is 35 psi. I should have the other enjoin running tonight. Ill start to build the boiler this week some time and hopefully do some testing this weekend.

RE: thinking of steam

I just got dun with building the 2nd steam enjoin. I have it Brock in and thought id hook them up to run off one throttle valve. Well after tweaking the timing on both enjoins they will not run at the same rpm. Because it is an air piston enjoin if one has more revisions or load the other picks up speed. Now with two throttles you could compensate one for the other but with now way to see the rpm on the transmitter of the enjoins im thinking of just linking the two enjoins together. If I fix two gears on to the flywheel of each enjoin and put then next to one an other they will be counter rotating. Don’t worry, I have it all in my head. Now on two the boiler. :D

it may not look that good but it does not leek. now ill do some live steam tests.

SKN,
About the wood cladding on the boiler. On the Heretage engine there's also a layer of insulation under that wood. Does it help conserve heat? Guess it has to to some extent, but doesn't mean much by way of performance. I figure it's more for looks than anything. I'm sure theres a way to put a throttle on a small steam engine but I doubt if it's gonna be a simple thing to do (I wish!). Usually it's all or nothing.

RE: thinking of steam

Thanks Doc.

There is so little power from the engine, it needs to go full bore all the time ;)
No need for a throttle.

Benny, you scratched that boiler?? That is awesome broh!! [sm=thumbup.gif]

What is the pressure relief valve set at?

benny2.0 03-07-2007 06:04 PM

RE: thinking of steam

thanks, Like I seed “its not the nicest boiler out there but it dose the job”. Ill be putting some insulation around it. I might also build some steal brace around it. I noticed that at 35 psi she starts to bow out. Id hat to have a seam fail and fill my boat with boiling hot water.

benny2.0 03-07-2007 06:06 PM

RE: thinking of steam

oops. yes the presure relief is set to go at 35 psi. that is the max thay say to run the motor at.
