Beginner Boat
Hi all
Every year about this time, I contemplate a new hobby. Well this year, I'm thinking about an RC boat I can build. I've never built one before. Do you have any suggestions for a first time builder? Thanks |
RE: Beginner Boat
Think in terms of something reasonably simple to start with, like Graupners Lotse. Small and inexpensive, just needs motor, battery, radio and paint n glue, but big enough to deal with a wide range of conditions.

RE: Beginner Boat
Dieselpower,
Welcome to the scale boat hobby. Once piece of advice that I would like to share with you especially on your first boat is.....KEEP IT SIMPLE. With many of these scale boats no matter which material used,( wood, ABS, etc) if the boat has A LOT OF DETAIL and it looks like a "masterpiece" when complete, SKIP IT. It is common for a beginner to get in over their head and become discouraged enough to not follow through on the build. Ultimately leaving the hobby with money & time wasted. Size is another factor that comes into play, the larger the boat is, the longer time it will take to complete. It is advisable to leave the big boat until you successfully complete the little boat first.......a good size range should be from 18" to 30". Some companies offer a rating system for the different kits that they offer. look for the "beginner" level and take it from there. Keep in mind for now, "less is more". Best of luck... -Rich. |

RE: Beginner Boat
I have a 1/2 finnished dumas US Coast Guard Lifeboat 33" sitting on my shelf and after doing the blanking and trying to epoxy the outside and ruining it... it's collecting dust... no plans on finnishing it.
