Hey,I'm looking to get a freight liner type model boat,preferably made out of wood,and as a kit.Anybody have some good suggestions?

The Lackawanna would be a decent tug to start out with.
Check out Harbor Models, or Loyalhannah Dockyard, or RCscalemodel for other options.

What kind of contruction is that neptune model from hobby lobby? Does it have motor mounts and what not prefabricated in the kit?

The Neptune is an ABS hull. Some Graupner kits may be fiberglass(GRP)
"Ghost" could tell you. He has built the Neptune, and the Sydney Star.

Harbor models lists the Neptune as a plastic molded hull.
Graupner kits are pretty good about supplying all the mounting points and other
elements needed for assembling the ship. Motors and RC equipment are usually additional items.

i have a neptune i dont really recommend it but it does make a decent retreival boat its sittin in the top of the closet for now though it decided to get in a fight with my buddys 3.5 tunnel lol

If your speaking of the Graupner Sydney Star I built one a while back. Goes together rather nicely and sails well,too. I do recommend putting in a bow thruster to help in the turns. If you look in my gallery you will find a picture of it. BTW: The hull is made out of plastic. Harbor Models should be able to get you one. I ordered mine from EBAY in Germany. Got a way better price than you can get here in the states.

That would depend on what the exchange rate. I ordered over seas the last couple years, but now, with the current exchange rate, the prices may be fairly matched.

yep I have them both,

both hulls are ABS, The Neptun has a wooden deck, no motor mount, however adding a block of limewood or balsa, epoxied into the base of the hull it can accept a motor mount of your choice,

I run mine on a vison 400 type motor. fittings kit is seperate though, however if you want, you can quite easily put on a new super structure. I have seen the Neptun done "cab-forward" with the super structure on the front hatch, with a centre island grafted onto it and a sub on the back on an A-frame, also "cab centre" as on the box, and "cab-aft" like most modern cargo ships, and thats how mine runs. its almost HO scale judging by the railings that come with it, so detailing it wont be hard, just call you your train shop.

can be made to run on a 7.2v ni-cad type pack with 1.2 kg (2.4lb) ballast

Sydney Star is essentially a BIGGER version, rather than a coaster, its a long distance trans-pacific panamax boat, propshaft mount doubles as the motor mount. needs bow and stern thrusters, however if you dont want to buy them, you can plate over the pre-drilled ports with styrene, then fill the exterior to smooth out the profile.

battery recomendations ate 2x 6v batteries, however I run 1x 6v battery with compensating ballast to settle her, 3x speed controllers and a 4ch rx.

in both cases use Robbe rudder 45x40mm on a 70mm shaft, I think its part 1481.

pictured below are 2 shots of My neptun "GEMINI" sailing in choppy water, thanks to full size speedboats, and my sydney star "Celestia" with her crane (now removed), sailing in calmer waters.

though Sub sinker recomends a thruster, I have found that just on rudder alone, it has a respectable turning ability, able to swing round quite nicely for a vessel of its size, using her two thrusters, it can be made to spin on the spot, crab sideways, and be able to manouvre in confined spaces.

I have a prop-shop 5-bladed propeller fitted to the shaft, and it made a BIG difference to the performance, making stopping the vessel in crowded waters MUCH easier, as the prop has better bite.

I recomend a Futaba Skysport 4, 6EXA, F14, on a surface frequency, or Spektrum DX6 or 7 / Futaba 6EX on 2.4ghz.

Umi,

Yes, it might be a close match now. The USD has taken a huge dive. I am still waiting for it to come back so I can order Engels Type VII U-boat. Too pricey for me right now, I'll wait for the exchange rate to get a little better.
