Source for small speed control ?
 

I asked about this in the "Speed - Electric" forum but it was suggested I also ask here -

I have a model Tug running a 2.4 amp 6 volt Pitman motor. Power is via an 8.4 volt NiCd. I was going to use an old Hitec SP-5/10A ESC I have but it seems to have passed away so I'm looking for a substitute. Most of the speed controllers I've looked at are rated for upwards of 40 amps, a bit big for the application. Does anyone know of a reversing speed controller more appropriately sized for this motor ?

I just ordered two Mtroniks from Cornwall model boats.
Just waiting for them to be delivered.
Good price considering the exchange rate. They have several to choose
from and all are waterproof.

Another option might be the Proboat from Horizon Hobbies.
Their little blue ESC is also water proof and can handle 6-12 v and plenty of amps.

Thanks UMI. That Mtroniks on cornwallmodelboats does look good. But I also went to Horizon and found the Hitec EZX-R and went for it. It was slightly less than the Mtroniks and saved a bit of time in shipping. :)

I am glad you found something to use.
I prefer to run 12volts, and use the water proof ESC. :)
I have a couple of the blue Proboat. One is in use in my Springer tug.

The Mtroniks I ordered from Cornwall arrived today. So from the UK to Oregon, eight days... great shipping.

I looked at the ProBoat unit also, the $40 price isn't bad. And I like the waterproof aspect of the ProBoat ESC but it's only available as a 40amp unit, a bit much for my 2.4amp motor. Also the higher amp units typically have a higher resistance making them more inefficient at the low amperage draws. I did buy a ESC from eBay last year, don't know the make but it was rated 40amps and it sure looks like the ProBoat unit, I'm using it in a 26" speed boat.

Incidently in all this searching I also found a unit by Dynamite (DYN4925) that sells for $30, does forward/reverse and will handle 110amps continuously. Should be a great unit for a speed boat !

I understand what you're saying about the Probat ratings.

I use the Mtroniks, because the proboat are not good at low revolutions.
Their senitivity in some cases rate from fast to faster... Although it seems to
be running ok in my Springer. That could be a condition of the motor installed.

The Dynamite (DYN4925) is a good deal, but again, it doesn't handle 12 volts which
is the main reason I end up with the Mtroniks.[8D]

Well thank you for the help. Barring rain (which is tentatively predicted), the EZX gets it first run Saturday.
