Over the weekend I have been working with the front nose watertight compartment. I was trying to think of different ways of installing the unit.I will post a few pictures as I progress with this installation. The first picture shows the box itself. The second picture shows the windrow beams and counter on which to they fit on. On the next posting I will explain on how I got up to that point. untell next time.

Well here we go with the nose interior beams. One of the most details that made the seaview look real was the interior nose windrow beams. The first time I saw the tv series,(I did not see the movie first) I saw them big steel windrow beams, bracing up against the windrows holding the ocean out,Fanastic I thought!!! This watertight box will give the needed detail to the sub,as the show did.I first cut out the windrows in the compartment with a dremel tool.In the next picture you see a lower counter that hold up the beams.(A newer counter was made with aligment holes to hold the beams) So you see the older counter in this picture. The inside of the compartment was sanded along with the front of the beam counter. This was gluded the the front of the compartment. Some of the side windrows were sanded out for beams to fit against. More below.

The first picture shows the beam counter (New counter with notches to hold bottom of windrow beams) The counter is glued to front of compartment, with 5 minute epoxy glue.I then placed the compartment thru the bottom of the flying sub cut out door.I aligned it with the front nose windrows, and toke a pencil to mark the location of the beams.Notches are cut out on the top of the compartment to hold the beams in there locations.(check often thru the windrows for the right areas were they go.Some of the bottom beams need to be trimed also. The last picture shows all the beams installed.

Default RE: Building the large 80 inch seaview

Its been some time since the last post.I have been working on a interior for the watertight box,for the 80 inch Seaview.First the watertight box does not have that much length to it,or it will be in the way of a flying sub bay area.So a interior was needed to show a sort of a 3D affect to the inside of the nose area.I could make a complete interior I guess for the sub,but then I would have a problem with keeping water out.For static display that would be fine, but I wanted to make this boat a rc model, and not just set on a shelf to collect dust. Two side panels were made, with some of the detail added.A back wall was made with detailing added. When painted it should bring out the detail, when looking thru the nose windrows.Molds will be made to capture all of the detail.First picture show the lexon bottom lid.the rest are of the new interior.

With the interior face plates done, rubber molds can now be made. These interior plates will slide in the inside of the watertight box,to give a some what of a interior look to the inside of the lighted observation nose when looking thru the front windrows The front windrow beams will mate up with the celling and rear interior plate. Not the most fancy interior but will work for what I want to use it for.

Its been a long road,in getting a watertight box interior together. I painted the back panel, and side panels last week.It seems like the paint could have layed out a little smoother. If I did a paint job with the second set of interiors I could improve the paint quite bit.In these pictures, you see a map table, and a figure in the rough state. In the next few days I will clean them up a lot before I mold them.In these photos the interior is show in the watertight box,not in the sub. Not the most fancy, but will give a person something to see in the nose, when the boat is in the water.

Today I got the watertight box interior as far as I want to go.I wanted to put a table and chairs inside to,but I want to start priming, and painting the sub.The weather is pretty nice and I want to paint the boat before I lose the warm weather. These pictures show the watertight box sitting into the nose.I have a clear plexglass windrow molded, to cover the box to keep out the water.Lights include the nose, front searchlight, and map table.I have to touch up the figure,to make it look more real. This will come later.

I thought that I would start on getting the main hull preped for painting.I done this by filling all of the seams with epoxy gel-cote.After I sanded the seams down to were everything was smooth and even. The next thing was installing some ballast tank inlet water holes.Of course you did not see any of these on the real model. The bottom of the hull was smooth when it went by the camera shots. I wanted to just add a few to the side keels,so you would not see them when looking at the boat from the side.On a real sub the ballast slots are along the center skeg. With this boat made for rc control, this would help with draining the boat.A real nice set of improved plans were sent to me from a very good friend,George Lynch, years back.He was really into the seaview.and made a set of plans that made sense of what the boat might have if it was real.I scribed torpedo doors into the stearn like was on his plans. He was a great artist, and sadely was killed in a car accident back in in 1994.Anyway his drawing still lives on.Here are a few pictures of what I did a few days ago.

The last few days getting the seaview primed toke more time than I thought.I sanded the complete boat, filling and sanding areas were needed. Then a wipe down with surface prep was done aroung three times.I then use my old stand buy airsol primer,Napa #7285 was applied to the surface. Then a sanding with wet and dry sandpaper #600 was done. After a complete wipe down was done,I could then use a paint by Dupli-Color called (Olympic White.)Its a very light gray, almost white paint. This is the closes color to the under belly that I know of. It sprays on easy.and lays a very nice coat of paint. More to come later.

Today I will show how to install the clear windrow plastic.I cut out the windshield (as I call it) so that it fits over the face of the watertight compartment.I then placed a strip of silicone to the face of the box.The clear windshield was carefully put on the front of the box.I taped the clear plastic on the sides to hold it in place. When dry I installed the box inside of the nose.I will silicone the floor later on,as I want to add chairs, and tables in the near future.

And now we get into the painting of the Seaview. There have been a lot of talk of different colors used in the shows. Some say it was painted a light gray.Others a blue gray color was used.Filming underwater will show different shades of paint then it really was.I wanted to look like the a darker gray like in the shows,This was used to show the model lighting underwater.Anyway you paint the color you like, but im going to go with this shade.First I primed the boat with napa primer no 7285 Then a few coats of ACE light gray paint was applied. Then to give it that real sub look,I lighty sprayed the Napa primer over the complete boat. This gave the model a flat look while also a more real look.Next time I will show the painting of the trim parts.
