Revell Gato
Hi guys!
I just purchased a Revell Gato with the express intent of converting it to a static diver. I am planning on using Dave Merrimans conversion sold by Caswell plating. I found a build thread on another forum somewhere but my question is, does anyone have any experience building/operating this sub and is it worth the elephant coins it costs? To me, $560.00 to "experiment" is not in the cards. I can only assume that Dave has his stuff together, as he IS Mr. WTC but I was just wondering about an independant voice.
Thanks & I will post photos of the progress when I get going on this project.
Pete

RE: Revell Gato
It is a farily dificult kit to assemble even with the instructional videa. BUT! It is also one of the sweetest model conversions out there. I got to see a fleet of 5 of these sailing together and you can tell that it all came from plastic. The D&E Sub Driver will work flawlessly for you. He checks every kit before it goes out. They are not "experment kits" if you ask me. They are professionally made and well designed for reliable service. It is my opion that it is cheaper to do it right the first time instead of fishing it off the bottom of a lake and re doing it!

I'm about to pull the trigger myself for the same kit from Caswell now that the final revisions have been made. I would say after evaluating all that comes in the kit, its well worth the money.
Dave Welch's WTC & component kit approach is certainly another way to go, but will involve more scratchbuilding & won't have the fixes Dave Merriman has made over the past year of development.
Be sure to take some time before you open the kit & read all of Dave's 31 Cabel reports here: [link=http://www.subpirates.com/viewforum.php?f=30]David Merriman's Cabel Report for the Revell Gato[/link]
Considering how much I've put into RC tanks that I never run I find this a far more enjoyable subject to build. Just be sure you buy an extra kit to build next year once Caswell releases D&E's pending torpedo system.

RE: Revell Gato
Rick, I myself like the VII-c U-boat for its 32nd scale appearance when out in the" Big Water", but sometimes I find moving it around from point (a) to point (b) as well as both in and out of the water to be be tricky, then again I presume it all comes with the territory associated with that of the larger scale kits.
