how to scratch build hulls?

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 8pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; background-image: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; ">My basic plan is to build a 1/72 or bigger wet hulled rc akula from scratch as i don't feel like shelling out for the fibreglass hulls, are there any particularly good or recognised ways of making a submarine hull other than making a fibreglass mould route?</span><span style="font-size: 8pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; ">

<span style="background:white">My plan is to make an internal Skelton out of ply and then cover it in something i haven't decided on yet for the outer hull perhaps thin ply but that might e a bit delicate.</span>

<span style="background:white">My questions are does my current planned route work or is it doomed to fail and i</span><span style="background:white">s making a fibreglass mould and doing it that way as difficult as it looks and if not are there any good guides on how to do it.

Thanks in advance

RE: how to scratch build hulls?

Here's how I am producing molds. The plug is made from foam board and then covered in drywall filler. It's easy to sand and it's sealed with KILZ drywall sealer.

Unless you plan to make several hulls, a "fiberglass resign" mold is expensive. It's now $ 35 or more a gallon.

However FYI as an example

RE: how to scratch build hulls?

I had a feeling that might be the case, are the any perticularly recommended techniques for just producing one off hulls or is fiberglass the only way?

RE: how to scratch build hulls?

There is another method to copy a plug using a layered buildup of a rubberlike mold material. Such a mold is less durable than a fiberglass resin type, but may be suitable for limited reproductions. A google search should bring up several detailed discussions describing the method and materials.

Steve neil made a book called RC Submarine modeling for dumb asses

It really is worth the purchase price.

There are also quite a few build threads on the "lost foam" technique on www.subcommittee.com
Most recently one from a guy doing his first scratch built Russian Alfa

Another hull material option

i designed and scratch built a fantasy sub boat using hobby plywood for skin and hobby wood for frame.
epoxy paint sealed the wood for water resistance. The resulting hull is very stiff and light.
Of course the shape is limited to the woods property to bend and ones imagination to use it favorably.
for bonding I used Tribond 3 wood glue.
my boat is on You Tube video. Search “Harpoon RC Submarine “.
