Steering My Sub
 

I am having a hard time on the steering of my sub im building from scratch. Can anyone help me out. I can either have a rudder, but i don't have enough space & time to fit the mechanisms in the sub.

Would it just be easier to attach two mini water proof motors on the two sides of the sub, then as one or the other speeds up or goes faster than the other side, it allows it to turn.

If the rudder idea is best where should I potition the rudder, and how do I set it up so that the rudder just moves the certain amount, not like a moter where it keeps going. Thanx,

you want the rudder as far back as possible if you can get it behind your prop that's the best. On my walmart sub i'm running a motor connected to a pushrod connected to rudder. To keedp the motor from spinning in circles i screwed to little screws into some holes on the case so the control arm hits them before reversing throw. I"m still working on a centering setup.

As for the differntial thrust setup that would work great too that's what the radioshack sub uses. I dont like the way it looks however.

i understand all that but when the screws stop it doesn'tthe moterkeep turning under pressure untill it breaks?

I just used a real weak motor with resistors on it also!.

oh, when u talk bout the screws do u mean the case on the moter, or the pushrod.

My screw was in the motor case. If you gotta little hole in your motor case you could probobly lightly jb weld a little screw into it.

Also why don't you use an actuator or a servo?

Yeah, my motors also have holes inthem, and perfect sizes too. Can u send some type of drawingor diagram of the asembly from the motor to the rudder, so I have a better idea. Thanx, JOE

Does any one know wether i should stick the rudder in between the propeller and the sub or after the propeller? Thanx, JOE

The rudder shoudl go after the propellor to get the benefits of prop wash. If its before the propellor the water that it deflects will be straightened by going through the proppellor.

Also for that pushrod i used zee bends at each end and a kink in the middle to adjust trim. For the pushrod i used the handle from a chinese food container.
