Building Sub from scratch
I want to build a sub from scratch. Just a simple semi -scale dynamic diver type. Iv built quite a few models in the past but this is the first sub.
I wish to build it from glass fibre. A friend will be doing the lay-up of the finished model as he is experienced alot more than myself, but what i need to do first is make a mold from which he can take a cast from, and then do the actual hull from that. To keep it simple as possible iv been looking at hulls which are near enough symmetrical all round, the idea being that one mold half can be used for both the top and the bottom. That way i will only need to make half a hull on the building board, and just the other small parts like planes and tower can be done separate. Iv been looking at Akula class and Alfa so far they seem close enough to fully round hulls to make this possible. What things do i need to consider if doing this ? Just trying to think it out far as possible to get off on the correct foot ! Also what is best for making the plug ? was thinking, ply formers for the centre section or maybe a length of plastic pipe, and end cones made from foam by hot wire ? Any advice ??? Thanks !!! |
RE: Building Sub from scratch
First of all, in my opinion you should use insulation foam aka blueboard or pinkboard. It is also easier to make the whole ship at once instead of building it in halves that way you can have a better idea of what the fiberglass casting will look like. I hope this helped, if not you can eamil me @ [email protected]
