Good sub for a beginner?
Hi there- I think I've made up my decision- well almost; just now I'm leaning towards a Sub rather than a battle ship... now I just wanted to ask if anyone could recommend a good sub for a beginner.
But when I say that I would rather get something like a proper military sub and have to work hard than some crummy noob model that I'll get bored of... Also I need to be able to buy it in the UK lol I was looking at THIS and it seems awesome- but I have a horrible feeling that means it's going to be quite hard to build? I've got Christmas holls coming up- so 3-4 weeks to build it; so could literally spend most of most days building it... :D and will have some help from my sister's boyfriend who built and flew RC planes... So what do you think? Thanks for any help |

I suggest you leave the Type XXI alone for a bit. Have a go at the Robbe Type VII (U47) it's not too difficult to build if you take your time. If you manage that ok then it's time to look at the Type XXI. Regards, Gary.

cool that looks pretty cool- I had like no idea what level I should start at or what level, indeed that kit was lol- so I just used it as an example on whether to go down or- well not up but lol
Thanks- Just one more thing- I'm not planing just now to buy this now- but so I know in the future could you have a look at this link: http://www.rchobby.co.uk/german_u-bo..._scale__w.html That's the U47- now it says at the side what I will also need with the KIT- could someone have a look and tell me what all from that list I need to buy or is it all of it except on of the two at the bottom where it says this OR this..? Also is that all I will need? Or are there other parts- will it also tell me with the Kit when it arrives what tools I need etc.? Thanks |
RE: Good sub for a beginner?
Yup, you'd need radio gear and some batteries for the sub. The "Tamiya" style packs are those 6-cell ones that you see on RC cars. Gell-cell batteries look like black boxes that require a different charger. As for tools, it's always recommended to have them ready at home when you receive the kit, some include tools, some don't.

RE: Good sub for a beginner?
OK, your link shows the same model, Robbe U47. When you buy it let me know and I'll tell you the cheapest place, £300 is far too expensive, should be more like £240. You will need 2 6V 5ah lead acid batteries (forget the ones on the ad). Do NOT but Robbe ones, they are another brand with Robbe labels on top! They can be got cheaper at a local battery stockist. You will need a 15 amp only speed controller, build up an Electronize one, they are really good. The ad states 2 servos, but you will need at least a 3 channel radio.
Special tools required apart from the usual, get yourself a razor plane. The most difficult job is trimming the hull sections to shape and this tool makes life a whole lot easier. Robbe's instructions and plans are very good and it does include a list etc. Hope all this helps. |
