Philipat,

Is your Pz III an Ausf L or the H "tauchpanzer"?

Ausf L...I got it about 3 years ago, too. So, it's possible that they quit putting the LEDs in there. After all, they've quietly fixed the cupola! [8D]

I'll have to check out my Ausf L's. I have a newer one that has an RX-18 and the corrected cupola, but I also have another one thats about 2 years old that has an RX-14.

Just thinking, but did your Pz III Ausf L originally have an RX-18? That could be the difference, because I'm not sure the RX-14 has the provision for a MG LED.

I just inspected my newer Ausf L. Sure enough I detected the wires going into the mantlet area and what looks like a backlit opening for the LED to light the MG. I'll have to fire it up to see what it looks like and check the old Ausf L. My bet is it won't have an LED for the MG's since I know for a fact it has an RX-14 which I replaced a long while back.

Mine had an RX-13...well, still does. I plan to replace it with an RX-18, but haven't gotten to it yet.

Episode 4

Phase 1- Electronic/electrical and turret mods

Turret Removal and Disassembly

Figures 27

View of underside of hull. Note hull 8 pin connector, small pcb connections, turret ring gear

Figure 28

Closeup view of hull 8 pin connector. I traced connections on PCB back to hull 8 pin connector. The white lead is the gun motor ground. The brown lead is the gun and barrel elevation motorcommon. The blue leadisthe elevation motor ground. This information will be used later when the new elevation/recoil unit is installed.

Figure 29

The three connections of the turret gun motor and elevation motor leads have been unsoldered from the small PCB. Two screws holding the turret ring gear have been removed. Turret ring gear has been removed. Turret has been removed from hull.

Figure 30

Screws holding turret bottom to turret have been removed, as well as turret bottom

Figure 31

Screws holding the front of the turret to turret were removed. Now the gun mantlet, gun barrel, turret front section, and airsoft gun can be disassembled by removing several remaining screws. The elevation motor and airsoft on/off switch can also be removed from the turret.

Episode 5

Phase 1- Electronic/electrical and turret mods

Installation of Heng Long IRBattle Unit Components

Figures 32

See photo of Pz IIIturret showing small plastic cover under cupola. Drill out retaining pins and remove cover

Figure 33

Mods are now made to the turret to accept the IR receiver base and the IR receiver itself. The first step was to verify orientation of the IR receiver. I checked both my KV-1 and Stug III and in both cases the larger locating pin on the IRreceiver is on the left. Based on this I first made a hole for the locating pin under the IRreceiver base, then using the IRreceiver base as a template, made the large left hole and the smaller right hole for the IRreceiver alignment pins.

Figure 34

IR receiver base in place

Figure 35

IR receiver wiring and 3-pin connector in place

Figure 36

IRreceiver in place

Figure 37

Finally cupola in place. Everything fits and looks correct, although nothing is permanent yet until some progress is made in installation of the elevation recoil unit and the mounting of the HL battle unit connector.

Figure 38

This is where I first encountered some difficulty. I decided to remove the airsoft warning light and install the IRbattle unit LEDin the same location of the gun mantlet. I'm a bit ignorant in this area and although they look the same, I decided to perform the Remove and Replace. So the warning light was very well glued in. I had to drill/file/chip out the warning light with the result being an imperfect hole

Figure 39

Shown is the IR BU LED inserted but not permanently. I am thinking installation could be achieved with clear RTV

Nice work. But, I wonder about the placement of the IR LED. That's going to create a heck of a "fan shot". Why not put the LED in the gun tube? That will hide it and narrow the beam. You could putty in the hole where the airsoft warning light was.

Default RE: Pz III Ausf H, Krasnogvardeisk Russia, August 1941 build

Philipat,

That's where my lack of understanding begins. So I have an LEDin my cannon already, although the gun is not installed yet. The HL circuit has both the LED in the battle unit and provision for the barrel flash. I don't understand enough about why both. See the figure below, with the cannonLED flash in the lower right corner and the IR Battle unit flash coming off the turet 8 pin connector. Are they redundant? Since I am fixing my canon flash to occur before recoil, can that be used as the IR BULED? Anyone's help is greatly appreciated with this topic.

Rodger,

Do you want the links for the internal antenna from Pzrwestand PerryS? And I guess the other is the Asiatam website address?
