Default Half Tracks? -SdKfz- 251 (22)

Hey all,

Been lurking for a good long while. I really enjoy some of the top notch Kits you folks put together. The level of scratch building skills and detail are sometimes just amazing. I too enjoy the HL faction that takes "toys" and make some really sharp, dependable Hobby level kits out of them. Leaning towards taking the plunge myself after a lifetime in RC (cars exclusively, although the Short course bug kit me hard!)

I'm a little surprised a the lack of Half tracks participating in the IR battles. I understand that the US M3 GMC ( which could be built on WSN M16 Chassis) was quickly eclipsed by the M10, M36 and Hellcat. I have also read some members not wanting to be 'saddled' with the early war portrayal in a Normandy scenario. I can wrap my head around that.

I didnt want to rehash an old topic so I searched the threads but couldn't find anyone with a German SdKfz RC conversion. A few folks seem to have RC'd the FOV 1/18 products. With that said I stumbled across a 1/16 sdKfz that could be converted to the 251/22. Nothing like a really fast 75mm Pak to liven things up. If anybody has seen or done one I'd love to see it and hear how it performs in IR battles.

Again, its a pleasure to be here and I look forward to interacting with you all in the future.

Regards,

J

Well to answer your question, I'm one of but a few that have built and used halftracks in combat.
I started with doing conversions of 1/18scale sdkfz251s and so forth.
At present I do have a 1/16th scale rc sdkfz251/22, I also have 2 M16 halftracks one captured with a 20mm flak38 mounted and one with the stock quad 50s.
I'm slowly working up a US 75mm M16 or maybe a su57 halftrack. waiting for new Elmod board.

Though in my opinion halftracks to some are not looked upon with favor, prolly due to limitations of the game itself and the view that a vehicle armed with less than a 75mm gun cannot take out a tank. (This at least according to some experts) But let us not restart that debate here.

They are loads of fun to build and use.

I have added some pics of my most recent endevors..

Kind Regards,

bullyhys

kubel-head,
First and foremost WELCOME! I think you'll find plenty of interesting and helpful things here on this forum. Over the last couple of years there have been several SdKfz projects coverting static kits in to RC battle wagons.

Perhaps the most recognized authority on these conversions is Merle from SCAT ( Southern California Area Tankers), he's done several, and if you do a search for his name (he posts under "bullyhys" here on these forums) you'll find some of his build threads. Here's a few links to some of his previous work

Dave Jones ("Count Chocula") who belongs to DAK has current 250/9 conversion project going

Anyway hope this helps at least a little.

bullyhys- first and foremost...WOW. really impressed with all of your halftrack conversions to RC. That is exactly what I was looking for. Don't have 1/100th the modelling skill to pull one off but as one of my favorite wehrmacht vehicles your 251's are sharp! as a vet I enjoyed the headgear in the last pic too!

Squid- I appreciate you linking me to those build threads....My thread search skills are apparently on par with my scratch building skills (non-existent!)

regards,

J

1/6 is the way of my future. Just waiting for the kids to finish college. As for the half tracks, a German half track is a must have for my collection.

Damn...

Now if only all the canadian toy shops weren't death on military toys like that. Can't even walk into any of the local R/C ones and buy a Tamiya, ya gotta order it, and prepay at ~least~ 50%... and their prices? I'll be getting my 2A6 from Dave, thank you.

As for the 251, when I was pointed that way, the chassis to start from ~scratch~ with was the 1/25 Panther/Jadgpanther from Academy. I picked up a pair from ToyEast (or was it R10?) and then was sent a third scrapped one, but they've been sitting on the shelf after I only minorly tweaked with the chassis.

Were I to start again, I'd want to get a 1/18 one, and then scale up a tad, or go Tamiya 1/35, and scale up. Mebbe try to recast the rubber from the Wasan M16 halftrack, and mod the rim... (wonder if Murphy Ma @Mato will sell rims/tires to us...)

Thoughts?
