Default Fury

So, when I saw the movie back when it was first released I immediately wanted to build the tank. I thought it was pretty neat and would make for a keeper. I got my hands on a Tamiya Sherman for parts from my buddy Reaper. I then began to compile some needed parts over the next few years. Yes, I was in no rush. I worked on other tanks while parts were dribbling in. I got some schumo stuff from ETO armor of course. Then some other stuff from Nick Aguilar...and then began making some scratch parts from brass. It took a long time to get to where it is now, and still more to go, but as I said, I am in no rush with it. Thought I should share some pics here for you guys. I am now waiting on some shapeways parts to arrive for the .30 cal. As I wait I am doing some small details when time allows... I hope to have electronics installed soon and then paint. Hope you guys like it. Nick's turret is fitted with servo recoil, custom bracket for same and micro gear reduction motor for elevation.

yellowshaker,
I am curious about your servo recoil, and elevation unit,, any pictures?
I have Nicks T23 turret kit for M4A3 76mm, and just made a servo recoil/elevation for it.
Total pain, no room in the turret.

The travel lock you have mounted is the 105 howizter one, its too tall.
Nick makes the correct one. You need to remove the travel lock hinges from the hull and install new ones just a tad up from the original hull ones since the 76mm one is shorter. Compare photos of the front and you will see what im talking about. I like to use the hines from the schumo or mato travel locks and install nicks into them.

I know about the travel lock, but the detail on the Schumo is far better, It may be incorrect, but in truth, most will never know it.

Um ok. But Nicks is very nice. They are quite different in shape. i hate to offend people, your doing such a beautiful detail job on the tank why not put the correct part on. But it is your tank and you only have to make yourself happy with your model.

Rich,
Does that mean mine will also be the wrong one?

I'm not offended at all man. People mis details or don't know so it is great to have these things pointed out. I went back and forth when assembling it and just said screw it.

Over the last couple of days I did a bit of clean-up, and mounted the exhaust deflector for an A2. Also finished making the actual exhaust for the smoke unit...not that you will see it...but did it anyway. Then had previously made and mounted the mirror brackets and put a plan together to make the actual mirrors. Worked out rather well and they do fold up and down and the heads swivel. Overall happy with it and soon I should be able to get it to the paint booth.

I like it a lot! Where did you buy that metal part in the axle?

I think it's interesting that the movie made you want to build the tank, because it had the opposite effect on me. I was all set to build an E8, something not many had, then the movie came out and the next thing ya know everybody and his brother just had to have an E8. Kinda took the wind right out of my sails.

But I like yours, and you're doing a great job.

With so many variations of the "E8", its hard to find 2 identical builds. Every ones seems to have some slight variation.
I am trying to build one and I am finding it very frustrating because there are so many differences, turret, barrel, engine, hulls, armor, tracks,
lifting hooks, engine doors, its just crazy! I think I have annoyed at least 2 people asking so many questions!

this is why,(see link) as you can see there are many different little variations, so build what suits you and what you like. But all M4A3s had the Ford GAA engine, hence the single door on the rear hull, and the dual access doors on the rear deck. Some had muzzle brakes, some didn't, some had the oval loader's hatch, some had the split loader's hatch, basically 2 different tracks were used the all metal single pin and the metal double pin, i believe the rubber track wasn't used until after WWII. very few 75mm turrets with HVSS actually saw combat in Europe.

I wanted an easy eight before the movie...always seemed to get into another build instead. With that said, Fury had some differences being an A2 in reality and not an A3. So, when I decided to start the build I knew it would be an A2 variant. I made sure to get the correct rear exhaust deflector from shapeways as well as the other bits like the rear deck for an A2. As was pointed out I did not put the correct gun travel lock as I used the Schumo part instead...now I am thinking I will change that also. It really isn't a big deal to me because I know most people seeing the tank would never know that little detail is incorrect. But I have to say for all the tanks I have built, this has been the most fun. The point of making the brass parts from scratch was important to me for the build. It adds something different that most guys won't be bothered doing. It also adds a flare of realism to the model where plastic cannot. Doing Photo Etch on many german tanks has given me the confidence to attempt all of this. I can thank Sevoblast for that LOL. What Manchu said is correct. There are so many different variants and so much to do Shermans are a fantastic subject. I am now dedicated to building a few of them and will not take on any other projects for some time. Also the tracks are indeed post war on this tank. T84 which also have an inaccuracy from the film variant. The guide horns are like blocks in the tracks from the movie...which are exactly what stock Tamiya tracks have. I am opting not to be bothered breaking down the 2 sets and making the correct in that way. I bought Impact tracks because they are the best and the guide horns are something I can live with. In the end, every tank you build is for you. If you are happy with it, that is all that matters. And how can anyone not love Fury...with that helmet and gas mask over the front light guard?

Well said Joe...unfortunately the film got a bad rap so most write the tank off too...but personally I think she’s a thing of beauty...my youngest fell in love with her too...lol

I think the pershing center guides on those tracks are a little taller than the Sherman ones and will catch or drag on the return rollers up top. I put a couple links in my m4a4 based m50 tracks and they were pershing and they seem to drag. You may need to file down the tops of the pershing guides so they don't drag.

As yall know I love shermans and while Ive read the minutia site about 10 times over I still spend time on it every week, at least a few days week too. I can tell when he updates and adds stuff. While I have a Panzer3 that I do not use, I only am building one other tank that is not a Sherman and its motivated just for club battling camaraderie.
