M1a1 usmc oif tamiya build
Hello 2019!
My first build of the year will be one of my oldest wish-list items. Many of you know I am a Shermanaholic but I have wanted an RC ABRAMS since I had the chance to play with a real one at the first Tamiyacon I attended in 2005! Here is the link to the walk around I did before attending my first RC tank battle with SCAT. http://www.desertarmor.com/WALK_AROU...USMC.html#grid
As Tamiya had just generated their 1/16 Leopard 2A6 there was rumor that the Abrams was not far behind..... 12 years have passed... well better late than never. One just happened my way over the holidays....time to go to work!
This will not be my first rodeo! In 2010 a club member and I got together and kit bashed a TUSK M1A2 SEP using various sources. You can follow that saga here: http://www.desertarmor.com/DAK_PROJE...EP_w_TUSK.html
Ironically that M1A2 was traded back to me and I traded it to another member who saw it and wanted it 6 months ago. Club life can be really complicated....

For the record, this is my first NEW IN BOX kit in many moons. Almost all my last 5-6 years of projects have been kit bashes, refurbs or trades. I know many of you have seen a few builds on this baby so I will just hit my mods to see if it helps inspire.... I do have a set of DKLM RC steel gears to improve the gearbox but that is the only "HOP UP" that I have in my stash. This most definitely will be a battler so performance will be considered in my build but I have never really had to go crazy to keep my machines running!

Congrats on your new kit!
Happy New Years!
Congrats on your Tamiya Abrams Kit and looking forward to following your build. Awesome!
I am assembling my, now year old, Abrams kit and building it mostly stock out of the box. Though, I am adding the free road wheel bearings the AAF sent as a bonus from Tamiya Japan and the DKLM sourced transmission metal gears. And not doing a build thread, so yours will be helpful for sure.
No doubt you know this, but if not: My Abrams tip is to make sure everything is plugged in, including both light harnesses, TBU, LED Emitter, before “first time firing” the main gun. Next, this issue is probably resolved, but the end of year 2017 Abrams kits had “chassis control electronic” fault issues (didn’t work), but Tamiya USA replaced any faulty units, without problem.
Enjoy, John

From battle experience I have seen a need to really be clever with the Emitter as the magnetic clip on gizmo is not really sexy, and I plan to use a flash in this tank. My first solution is to use the back up optical gunner's sight aperture and "hog it out a bit" to add a sleeved emitter. My effort so far is promising.

You could use the accessory spot light mount and put it there I like did for some experimental type IR projector or night scope or whatever. Makes it in line with the barrel nicely.

Or you could do like I did, with my HL Abrams, and mount the IR emitter on the .50 cal mount over the main gun. I used a .22 cal shell casing for the emitter tube. It's just the right size if you drill out the base.

Tamiya LED Emitter mount solutions; another point of view.
The Tamiya Abrams Kit's LED Emitter Mount Device, didn't like it.
Not included in the Tamiya Abrams kit and sourced from the AAF Museum, the Tamiya LED Emitter Device.
The perfect device for targeting and bringing down Godzilla and or knocking out way lessor rc tank IR battle game foe.
Center line barrel mount, this is the deadly, proven, easy to dismount for display and the proper Tamiya
based LED Emitter Device.
Display mode, a clean solution.
Enjoy, John

Oh that's right. An M1A1.
It will be fun to fight alongside that tank next time I go battle with you guys. Please keep the info and pictures coming.

Eric that looks SICK!
Ethan, you will probably find this tank is too fast and big for your field. That's the tank you should bring to San Diego. I love tearing around our huge field with my fast abrams. Its perfect for it.

Nice build so far!!!

Andy probably decided not to build it due to all the problems with the kit.

Has lots of mistakes on it...I've slowly been trying to fix some of them.
