Default 5:1 Gearboxes

Hey fellow tankers. I recently received my Taigen 5:1 gearboxes in the mail and after installing, I realized that I had made the mistake of thinking that they were super high torque rather than the super high speed that they are. Since I don't want to bother sending them back, how can I make them have more torque.

What tank did you put them in? I've been doing speed and torque tests with those in the Panzer 3 and top speed is about 5 scale miles per hour on the high side but they've got good low-end torque and climb the hill with no problem. There's no question they're much better than the 3:1 gear boxes that come stock in the tank.

I put them in my metal Taigen Tiger 1. But as I said they are really weak on carpet and won't even climb over a fairly flat couch pillow, something that the 3:1's could do. I really do not understand it.

You bought the wrong gearboxes. 5 to 1 is only good for light tanks. You need the 4 to 1

Now you have a good excuse to get a metal Edition Panzer 3. You already have the gear boxes for it.

The 5:1 are pretty good in the metal edition PIII. Still about 5 scale mph too fast, but the low end performance is much better than the 3:1, which are ridiculously fast at 36 scale mph, 40% too fast, even.

Why won't they work in my tiger 1? What so different from this. If forebear sells it and the reviews say it works, then why won't it work in my tank? It really is bizarre, as it is as if it has no torque at all.

Just look at these reviews...

If you get the time and have the resources, will you try to install the 5:1 gears onto one of your tiger 1's and then send me a video so that I can compare my tank to yours? It just really does not make any sense to me that several of the reviews state that it provides excellent performance and great torque on the tiger 1's and that forgebear is selling it as a package with the tiger 1 chassis.

Swap gearboxes into a tank I know won't work so I can make you a video? You don't ask much, do ya? I have no need to make such a video, I've known the steel 5:1 won't work in a heavy tank since they were prototypes. I'm not responsible for any review that says you can use these in a heavy tank, I've always said exactly the opposite. If they aren't what you want I suggest you try to return them. You did pay with paypal. right?

I can't remember. I don't want to return them either as I have no time to do so. I just watched a video of speedy put them into a Sturmtiger and it worked great. I just am trying to think of where I went wrong. And how did you know that they would not work?

I thought it was common knowledge, It's been discussed several times on several forums and I just thought everybody knew. I got a set when they first came out, fried an mfu on a KT, and haven't used them for anything except PIIIs and PIVs ever since. But in a Panzer III they work great. And in that video he never says what gearboxes he put in the sturm and he doesn't show a photo of them.

I watched his build video for this tank.

What I am going to try to do is switch the 360 motors for the 380s that I have on the old gearboxes.

Do what you want, but remember that I told you I advise against using the 5:1 GBs in a heavy tank.

Can you advise me on how to get the pinion gear off of the 380 motors? This little gear is the only thing preventing me from putting the 380 motors on and it seems that it is glued or something.

Ok you were right. They just do not work. Does Forgebear do returns?

You'll have to check with Forgebear. I still say get yourself a Panzer III and use them in that.

I use a gear puller, but I did a video once on using a pair of wire strippers and a punch to remove pinions. But if you plan to stay in the hobby it's a good idea to pick up a gear puller. You can get one for under 20 bucks on ebay. This is the puller I have, less than $10 with free shipping.

Thanks Gary, This helps out a lot. Unfortuantly, I cannot get a refund from forebear so it looks like I am keeping the gearboxes. I will try to get the pinions off now and see what I can do from there. Worst comes to worst, I sell the GBs on eBay.

That gear puller works fairly well. I have the same one. The only issue is that sometimes the gears can be too close to the motor to use it even on the skinny side so you just have to be careful not to damage the motor. The gears should be tight on the shaft. If they weren't then they would slip and not move the tank.

Do you guys know how much larger the 390 motors are compared to the 380s? I know that I can fit the 380s but I was not sure about 390s.

The 390 case is about 10mm longer than the 380 case, otherwise diameter is the same.

The Over All Ratio of the 5:1 boxes is 45.66:1 as compared to the OAR of 3:1 of 39.33:1 and 4:1 of 89.14:1....all of the Taigen variety (from my tooth counting so beware.....lol)

The 360 motors do not have the torque of the 380's nor of course of the 390's if all else is equal.

I'm happy with my 5:1 boxes which both reside in StugIII tanks since they lie really flat to miss the low profile of the Stug interiors, so I can see why they work well in the Panzer III. Don't expect large amounts of torque though, and putting them in a large Tiger 1 is questionable. My Tiger 1 has steel 4:1 boxes, with 390 motors, and it needs it with the weight of all those large diameter wheels and sprockets, not including the wide and dense tracks with mondo traction. I doubt 390's will fit end to end in the Tiger with the 5:1 boxes, since the endbells align directly only in these boxes.

Perhaps someone has an extra pair of 4:1 boxes they would trade you for??

Hey nice suggestion Jerry! I did not even think of trading with someone! I will make a thread if I can't get these 380s to work.
