Default Taigen Sherman (76) availability

My son who is 12 has a heng long sherman, but he wants the long barrel, as he calls it. I know he wants the (76) I have looked into the taigen website and of course the IR option is out of stock.(kit form) I am not willing to hand over hundred dollar bills for the rtr when i will be replacing the electronics anyway, they do have the airsoft version in stock, that is not what i am looking for though. the IR version never seems to be in stock. I know that the emitter and flash are not expensive just trying to figure out the most cost effective way to go about this. It is a shame that Eric is no longer with IMEX it would be so much easier talking with him and getting results "sigh"

Hard to say when the IR version will come in, but you could get the kit for now with the airsoft.

Dude Buy the airsoft and gut it. I mean removal of the airsoft gun is super simple and all you have to do is replace with the IR material. Some 18 ga wire, an IR emitter which is only a few bucks and the electronics which you were going to replace. The airsoft should be cheaper and switching it over is not that hard.

Ordered and free shipping......Freakydude and in no way is this disrespectful yes i know it is easy to change everything over I was just hoping that I could avoid that. Now it is deciding on two worthy boards for aforementioned sherman and the Tiger. Oh and a gear set because that is not in the kit and of course they are also out of stock.....yay

For me it doesn't matter if it's IR or Airsoft as I install a servo recoil/elevation and dump the Asiatam recoil. Not a fan of it.

Anyone that has the kit version, what paint do you recommend? Also Taigen recommends the V2 gearbox, but that is not in stock and I have been searching other places, but to no avail. So would the heng long gears fit? I did contact Taigen and they said the new v3 gearboxes are in stock.......and those cost a bit more, I am just trying to keep costs down

Rich what olive drab paint is close? I have an airbrush and I have read your article about mixing the tamiya paint to achieve the proper depth of color.....I am being lazy and really just want a shake rattle and roll spray paint.... doesn't need to be perfect just something close, tamiya has 37,000 different olive drab colors

Thanks,
Wade

Tamiya does not have a close color. Their Od has changed twice since 2020. I did get a new bottle when they finally showed up mid 2022 and it seeemed close to where it was before, but still a bit different. I think its a tad lighter now. I was playing with IDF modern Siani grey alot though, (which is actually green when fresh)
Vallejo has some good OD.

For Tamiya, try the recent OD and test a few different mixtures of the dark yellow try 4-1 (80/20) OD to dark yellow and 3-1 (75/25) and spray on some test scraps at least as big as your hand primed with the same primer as your tank. Then go outside and look at the dried paint on the ground in the dirt and on grass and see if that is what you think your tank would look good wearing. If you think the color is too dark then mix it 6-4 and see what it looks like.
Now remember its going to be flat. IF you put any clear coat on it for decaling the paint will get darker. If you intend to do that, then use that process on your test scraps and go through it all to see what your final color will look like before you paint the tank.
Also make sure you spray one test part with stock paint so you have a bearing of where you are starting with.

For right out of the bottle color, I really like the Model Car Works Laquer paint. Perfect OD 319 and his older OD#9 as well. However they do make enamels, which are totally the wrong color. The Laquers are large tall bottles and ready to spray. They are thin and are glossy for decals and then flat overcoat.

IF your following the 3d printed sherman thread that is current, Rick used tamiya rattle can TS-28, it came out pretty nice.
Like I said, they have had color profile changes in 19-21 so its hard to nail down what is perfect and how to get there now. Sorry thats the best I can offer.

If it helps, here is the TS-28 sprayed over a black base coat.

Comparison between inside and outside in the sun.

Thank you everyone for the responses, over the years I only did German armor and I have been away from the hobby for awhile. I will do a little research and take everyone's advice and make a separate post with the build.

I use Tamiya rattle can spray number TS-28 for my Olive Drab. The ambulance and CCKW in the back are Tamiya TS-28 spray can, the bridge is Rust-Oleum "Army Green" spray can, and the halftrack is Torro's version of Olive Drab.

I ordered two cans of the Tamiya TS-28 two days ago, it will be sprayed over a black automotive primer.

Besides the Tamiya TS, I also ordered the Vallejo and for a base coat rustoleum black primer and black textured for the cast.
