We don't build tanks to make money, but we built one model with the idea of using an engine to drive a tank we wanted from a young age, so it was fun, but the limitations were clear.

Default Application of Gun Stabilizer Unit

I checked that the main gun of my K2 Black Phanther tank completed this time is very well driven up and down with the servo (D845WP).
Therefore, I got a TVC-GSU-12 quote from SGS Electronics in Germany to apply GSU to my tank.
The price of the product is 251.6Euro including shipping fee to Korea. This price is said to be excluding VAT.

The technical confirmation required by the manufacturer to apply this product is

1. The angle control of the main gun will be done with servo.

2. The drive of the turret is done with a motor and the position of the motor will be located on the turret, not the body.

Of course, I use servo to control the angle of the main gun, but since the position of the turret rotation motor is on the main body, not the turret, I will consider some changes and install it.

Sometimes I will share the installation process and test underground on this thread.

SGS Electronics was very kind to give technical advice.
Thank you very much.
As a technical advice, they suggested installing a UBEC to ensure that the power of the large servo, which is the driving force of the main gun stabilizer, is properly supplied.
So I bought a UBEC that can supply 8.4V from AliExpress and I am waiting.


The red mark is the UBEC which provides stable power to the large servo.

It is a UBEC that can supply two types of power at the same time, consisting of one set of power lines that can supply 8.4V and one set of power lines that can supply 12V.
One line is connected to the GSU and the other line is connected to a compressor that generates compressed air for main gun firing.

In the aftermath of the Russian war, the TVC-GSU12 that I bought in Germany last week did not arrive, so I am learning how to install and set it up in advance.
The setting is divided into the calibration that must be done all the time, and the parameter 1 process to remember the location of the main gun and the recoil when it is first installed, and the parameter 2 that selects a double function that includes a trigger function on a stick that moves the location or direction of the GSU or fires the main gun, and each process can be skipped if unnecessary.
The picture is a flow chart of the settings.
The process seems complicated in the picture, but surprisingly simple.

Paladin-18evRecently, I came to an interesting conclusion while testing RC transmitter from several companies.

When controlling an RC tank, it is common to adjust with both sticks or control with one stick through V-TAIL mixing or Elebon mixing.

In my case, I prefer to control the tank with a single joystick.

By doing so, I can pursue the convenience of controlling the turret or main gun with the other hand while controlling it at the same time.

What I want to explain is that large and heavy tanks, such as brushless motors or engine-powered ones, can be easily moved forward/backward and left/right pivot rotation, but if I want to make a simple left turn or a simple right turn, there is a problem that the inner track, which becomes the axis of rotation, does not stop reliably and makes an unwanted rotation along the outer track that rotates, and I would like to share how to solve this problem.

To ensure reliable performance, brakes to hold the left/right track of the tank must be included on the left and right sides.

To explain purely from my experience, the existing Chieftain or King Tiger tank I had could be controlled by 2 channels in implementing output, direction, and brake functions using a gearbox-integrated brush motor.

The tank powered by an outrunner brushless motor required a total of 4 channels, allocating 2 channels to control output and direction and 2 channels to a brake system that held each rotation.

In the case of an engine tank, 5 channels are required because the output of the engine must be controlled in addition to the brushless method.

Whether it is a brushless motor method or an engine method, front/back and left/right pivot turns are possible with a single joystick, but there was no answer other than the double stick method to enable simple left and simple right turns.

This is because the mixing stage of the transmitter ends in the first stage of any manufacturing company.

In other words, it was impossible to mix the left and right brakes once more after such mixing because Elebon mixing or V-tail mixing was required to control with just one joystick.

However, in the case of the stick method, the relationship between master and slave can be set based on each stick, so the left and right sticks can be easily set as the master and the left and right brakes as the slave. In the case of the engine method, the left and right sticks can be set as the master at the same time. By using the throttle as a slave, 5 channels could be organically controlled with 2 sticks.

This time, I purchased flysky paladin-18ev among transmitters with left and right slide bars and joysticks and set up the transmitter's model to apply the method of using double stick mode and single stick mode while exchanging modes with one switch.

On November 23, 2023, after completing the assembly of the K2 tank and conducting nearly 40 days of operational testing,
we have identified issues that need improvement and initiated the upgrades.

Upgrade Details:

Track Displacement Issue:
While there were no problems during forward or backward movements, occasional track displacement occurred during left or right turns and pivot turns in place.
To address this, we decided to add a track detachment prevention device.
The principle of the track detachment prevention system involves securing the central hub of the track from both sides,
preventing it from detaching during sprocket rotation.
Additionally, considering foreign object entanglements, we plan to create debris clearance holes.


Insufficient Engine Output:
We are replacing the existing 35cc engine with an 80cc engine to increase the tank's overall output.
We will also improve the generator operated alongside the engine.
During the engine installation process, we will modify the appearance of the off-the-shelf engine,
customize the conversion to use a miniature circulating pump for continuous fuel supply instead of gravity,
and add a new gearbox considering the engine's rotation axis.


GSU Installation:
To introduce a stabilizer system for horizontal and vertical control of the main gun turret,
we plan to increase the number of servo motors for upper and lower control of the existing main gun from 1 to 2.
This aims to enhance the reliability and torque of the turret's movements.


Speed Improvement:
Due to slipping in the clutch and low gear ratio transmitting the power of the existing 35cc engine,
the tank's mobility was compromised. To address this,
we will increase the speed of the tank by replacing the engine and adjusting the gear ratio to achieve a more speedy tank movement.



Tanks have been put on the workbench for upgrades in the new workshop.

A new 80CC Zenon engine, replacing it with this engine will increase the torque of about 2.5HP.

Approximate dimensions were measured to fit in the 80CC Zenon engine, tank engine room.

The important shape of the engine was briefly expressed in a 3D drawing, and a power transmission device added to the existing gearbox was designed.

Sprocket modification to prevent deviation

The spacer that will hold the track center was equipped with a foreign object removal hole and tooth to ensure power transmission.

Due to the delay in the arrival of the upgrade parts of the K2 tank, we replaced the engine of the MERKAVA tank and started the test operation

MERKAVA tank that finished commissioning has been moved to the workshop. Size is being compared to K2 waiting to upgrade.

Design is underway to transmit axial power to the generator and main gear to the engine shaft of the K2 tank.

We would like to temporarily install a new engine to proceed with on-site customization of the location.

During the long winter, We replaced the engine of the MERKAVA tank and completed the trial run while upgrading the K2 tank.
During February, We will finish the upgrade of the K2 and share the video and photos of running with the MERKAVA tank.

The new engine has to be installed with the shaft rotated 90 degrees unlike the existing engine, so a gear has been added to receive the rotational force transmitted to the shaft.

Parts connected to the engine shaft to drive the generator have also arrived.
