New 2nd Two-Volume of Son of Sherman Coming Out Soon

Ten years ago I purchased a copy of 'Son of Sherman Volume 1' 'The Sherman Design and Development' and this was, at that time, THE most definitive narrative on the details of the Sherman tank. History, LOADS of detail pictures, and descriptions of the various manufacture variations. Absolute Excellent Sherman detail book!
This first volume is about 380 pages long and, if I remember right, it sold ten years ago for about $50. Now copies of it sell for $300-400+ if you can find'em now.
Now, ten years later, the 2nd volume is coming out this fall in a boxed TWO volume set, 900+ pages, with even more detail info. It's not just a re-release of the first volume but includes even more, updated, refined info in the first book and expands even more in the second book. The boxed two volume set retail price is slated to be $149.95. (and when printing ceases and, like the 2013 printing, the value will go UP!)

Yeah Bob! If you're an M4 Sherman fan this is THE BOOK to have! I was amazed at the details the first volume covered and refered to it every time I built an M4. I'm definately looking forward to the two volume set release this fall and'll post when it's available on here.
I got mine on Amazon back then but it'll probably be on ebay too so I'm going to check to see if there's a lower price on either but I'm really anxious to getting the 2nd (900+ PAGES!) edition.

I didn't see this thread the other day before I posted it in the Tank Reference Book forum. I put my name on the list for copy a while back when I saw it mentioned on Missing Lynx, having missed out on the first edition I'd been looking forward to it. Then week before last I came across a softcover version of the 1st edition listed on eBay and made a offer on it. For $42 it landed on my doorstep 3 days ago. I've only flipped through it and fully read the first two chapters so far and I'm looking forward to the 2nd edition even more now. There's already so much information in the one first edition book, I figure the two second edition books are going to melt my brain.
AMPS has a review of an advance copy, it looks impressive.

I'm inflicted with this disease that makes me buy every reference book on any subject of my interests. I reserved my copies from Doyle books, you may find it cheaper on ebay or other places but this way I know I will not miss on getting my copies. I have the first one and I've used it so often the binding is in pretty poor condition.

Wow, that is a deal, thanks for the heads up Mike!!!

Yup, preorder with David Doyle Books. I might have saved money waiting or going to ebay but I'm happy to have these here now. Guests here for the weekend so I may not be able to dig in until Sunday night.

It was just released. Keep an eye out on websites, I'm sure you can still get copies, it's the price that may sting a bit.
I paid top dollar when the Hunnicutt Pershing and Sherman book were reprinted many years ago, but I don't regret it.
As I mentioned earlier in this thread, if a reference book comes out on a subject of interest "I must have it"!

Just checked, sold out... Bummed that I signed up for pre-order and never got notified. Checked spam folder nothing there either. 😔 Ah well, perhaps based on its popularity Mr. Doyle will do another run., I can hope.

I signed up for the Pre-order, got notified by email Sept 4 they were in - with a 1 week payment window (by Sept 15). I didn't see any way to pay for the thing or contact David Doyle books to arrange payment - so apparently my order got cancelled. There was a link in the email which took you to the website and to the SOS book -but it said "sold out", so not clear how I was supposed to pay for it. The website has no email or contact info. Kind of a screwy process. If they are on ebay - it will be at ridiculous prices.

I replied to the notification email yesterday - thinking I had nothing to loose and its probably a robo notification anyway. But amazingly David replied. It took nearly all day Saturday of back and forth email to get it straight - but I think I will get my pre-order. Perhaps anyone wanting one should reach out to David directly? They may have a few cancelled order or extras. No guarantee he will have one. I agree with others tho - why make this such a difficult process and such a limited run? I would not pay $500 for any book, much less this one. The website David Doyle Books. com has a "contact us" inquiry submittal form.

It says right on the website they won't be taking names of those interested in the books. They will make the extras available at a later date to be determined for a price to be determined. My guess is that one day he will determine that all the orders have been fulfilled and then just dump the rest on the site. The extras will be sold in a matter of hours and those that want one will be just SOL because they miss the random posting on the site.

You will enjoy them, I've paged through and the books are great. Now what to do with all my other Sherman reference books? Are they obsolete with this release? Will anybody buy them and are they worth anything? This set does only cover WWII, so references for Shermans post war are still good. Anyone know if there are further releases planned?

I just got a set, but I had to buy it off eBay. Since I've spent $100 for a book before I decided that the $249 plus shipping was within what I wouldn't regret spending on the two books. There were only 4 sets left so it seems that Doyle decided to just sell them on eBay. Looks like only one is left. People are still trying to sell their vol 1 editions for more than I paid for this set so I think I did ok. At least that's what I'm telling myself...
