Default Bandai Kits

My next rc tank will be (if I can find one) the Bandai Panzer IV or Stug kit. Id like to go all out and upgrade it with the metal suspension, roadwheels, return rollers, and tracks from BA.

From what I've read the gearbox and MFU of choice (for one of these kits) would seem to be from Tamiya's Tiger I or King Tiger. I've built the Tiger I, but not the KT. Which would be the best choice? Hopefully someone on here has upgraded one of the Bandai kits with Tamiya internals.

I'm working on a Bandai Hummel right now, upgrading it to Tamiya KT electronics and gear boxes. Keep an eye on my thread for the next couple of weeks and I will keep you posted on my sucesses and failures. My current opinion is that they are more delicate (small details, anyway) than I had anticipated, but I am glad to have something different than the norm to build.

If you're doing a Panzer IV, you may want to go with the Sherman MFU since it doesn't have recoil. The Panzer IV turret is pretty tight.

Either the Tiger or King Tiger electronics will work, I used the Tiger electronics in my P4 and does well. Scale 16 mph with stock bandai gearboxes and track.

The King Tiger electronics seem a bit more 'balanced' than the Tiger however as the electronics unit had gone through a couple of version changes.

They aren't as easy to find anymore it seems. [] I found mine on Ebay for a decent price, but it was just by chance. Tomzag sometimes has one or two, but I seem to remember him selling one to another member recently.......you could PM him to find out if he has any ideas......he knows alot more than most people.

Good tips guys, thanks!

Looking forward to hearing about your Hummel Jason. You mentioned the parts seem to be delicate, is it a more brittle plastic compared to Tamiya's?

The tiny parts definitely seem more brittle on the Hummel than on my Sherman or Pershing, but I cannot speak from experience about the other kits. However, I am willing to bet that they are very similar. The Hummel model is really cool with the double rear doors, but on my model the hinges did not withstand my handling them very well.......but maybe I'm just a clod.

I went to a hobby shop today and bought a section of piano wire and a length of brass tube, from which I intend to try to fashion new hinges.

no stug has electronics and engine, they only use motors.
