Default AEC MKIII SCRATCH BUILD 1/16TH

Well, After attending the SCAT night run, I found that my Dodge conversion model is not suited for the terrain. The 2wd makes it very difficult in the hills. My next scratch built car will be the AEC mkIII. I allready have the tire masters so its time for the drivetrain and chassis. The Team Associated 1/18 truck will supply the drivetrain. 4 wheel shaft drive, ball diffs and terrific suspension will make this a hit at the battlefield. Chassis will be acrylic and styrene. The build will be very similar to my M1117 in 1/12th scale. This thing is about the size of a Sherman so there is plenty of room for sound, lights and turret rotation.

More to come

Man, that is cool! I think that something like that would kick butt in a battle with regular 1:16 scale tanks. [sm=punching.gif] I'm sure it would be classified as a light tank, but it would probably move much faster and could avoid getting hit as much......I will have to watch your build closely.

Could you imagine Tamiya Sherman electronics with a battle unit in something like that?!! [X(]

Great Idea!!!

Thats the plan, Full TBU compatability. How many tamiya components I need is the question.

Heres a couple more shots. Any additional photos would be appreciated.

Look at its size next to the Sherman! Much bigger than I thought.

DMD
MF unit
Communication cable
Cannon flash unit?
TBU

.......basically everything electronic. [] You would have to buy a FO Sherman kit in order to get the parts. Unfortunately, it will still cost about $500.00, plus the cost of the scratch build. [:-] It might not be worth it, unless you had planned to buy a Sherman, anyway.

Of course, if that other battle system comes out as planned, it could eliminate most of that cost. Heck, I bet you could install the HL smoke and sound board to get all of the movements, functions and sounds. Add the cheap battle unit and it should work, right?

DH,

Check with Merle (bullyhys) or Max about their alternative battle circuits. They might also save you a lot of space in addition to $$$.

I can allready get the turret functions, sound and lights by scratch. The new battle system is what Im waiting for. I will set aside room for an upgrade when it comes along.

The battlesyatem by Clark Enterprises (Tiawan) may be your ticket! I hear the Singapore RC tank guys are going to Beta evaluate the system before its released.

You are out of control. Maybe I'll bust out my LAV again to keep those wheeled AFV coming. My pacific sherman seems to get farther and farther from completion.

Got a bunch done over the holiday. Front and rear gearboxes mounted the the basic hull buildup. Plex used for the base and fenders. Styrene for the rest.

Turret and barrel test fit. Next step will be getting the driveline installed and testing the performance. That means finishing the wheels and tires first.

interesting , great job too ,
how do you know the size to cut the parts to make it 1:16 scaled?
have an defective rc truck4x4 that i would like to turn in an allied forces armored truck, yours really tempt me (1939-45).
if i had dimensions could start building you project.

Scale the 3 view plans and work on top of them. This car has very limited documentation so there is a bit of photo/plan comparison needed.

DH,

Would the Associated running gear fit in your Dodge, our the US 1/2 Track? Or is that why you scratch built at 1/16th scale, so as to get more room?

Pretty dam awsome so far......

Hi Kevin,

The AEC is one of the larger WWII 4 wheel tanks. Its wider and taller than the Sherman. You wont believe how big this thing actually is. As for the Dodge, no way to fit it in. I will do a size comparison photo tonight.

would you be able to do plan packs of the 2 builds that you did??

i hope you will be able to, all it would need is diagrams with measurements and angles(sorof what plans for planes are like).

thanks

I build over enlarged plans I find over the internet. They are scaled by a large copy machine. Sorry, I dont have the time to draw them up individually.

Here is the M1117, The AEC is a personal file.

Starting the project back up after vacation and building a Tamiya Pershing. One thing I will be changing:

Cutting out the floor of the hull, making a new one and having it removable from the upper hull. I was having too much trouble reaching in the small spaces. Now I can take the top off and test all running gear with easy access. As for the turret, I will use a small camcorder motor and a set of gears.

Here is the progress. Rebuilt the chassis by using a removable aluminum pan. All suspension, steering and gearing is worked out. I will do the final suspension tuning when the actual weight is determined. Its ugly but dont judge it by the wheels. They are from the donor car. I am currently in the setup stage for the rubber tires. They are coming along beautifully. Daughters HL Tiger is there for size comparison. Has nice low gearing and was able to chug through that tall grass. Will be better with the taller tires.
