Need to buy the radio for the tank..

I know the standard radio for the tank is the Futaba 4VWD:

[img]http://image.rcuniverse.com/forum/upfiles/240890/Fd92482.jpg[/iage]

But I'd really prefer to use the 4EXA:

[img]http://image.rcuniverse.com/forum/upfiles/240890/Ki18258.jpg[/iage]

In theory, the 4EXA should work since it has analog trims.. as long as I can make the throttle auto center.. (if Futaba would sell the spring to me by itself, I'd be all set..)

And it is FM, and yes, you can get the 75Mhz version for surface use..

I will need to call Futaba to see what's up.. (to see if they would sell me the parts to convert the rachet to self centering..)
LB I have the part numbers if you need them. In the mean time I made my own using the stock arm as a template.
HSP78901 ST-53 SWING ARM for $.37
HSP67450 SPRING for $.45

I have them on order over at AAF Tank Muesum
http://www.aaftankmuseum.com/

THis was the email I received on 1/30/07:
Thanks for the email and inquiry of the swing arm and spring that you require.

2 swing arms and 2 springs would be $3.00 including postage. Mailed USPS

presently the swing arm is out of stock I have a late Jan delivery, but then again it is late January and no swing arms, so I do not know when they will be available. I have some springs but will need to order more ( these are becoming very popular)

If you would like to order these from me - please reply to this email - you will not pay for them until they are ready to ship out to you. At which time I will contact you with payment info.

Thanks
Have a wonderful day
Karen Gasser, Director
AAF Tank Museum
Here is the email I received from Futaba:
hank you for your recent e-mail.

Those are part numbers:

HSP78901 ST-53 SWING ARM for $.37
HSP67450 SPRING for $.45

yeah and my local parts supplier they want me to go through can't even get the most important part. Hence why I decided to roll my own and just wait to hear back from Karen.

SilentBob,

THANKS!! I definitely need to order up some of those parts!!

What radio do you use?? I'd like to use 4EXA w/ 75Mhz frequency for surface use.. I think that'd be a good one to use.. (so it still has the analog trims, so you can use the MFU quickly..)

I'm using a 4YF, nothing fancy. Got it cheap off ebay a while back.

I see.. I don't think 4YF can be had w/ the surface frequency, though... unless you sent it back to Futaba to have it modded... that's why I am thinking about the 4EXA.. hmm...

I went to Yahoo Groups and did a search and could not find Armorhut.. could it be under a different name now? Or?

Don't forget to sign up to armorhut on yahoo groups. It's where I found answers to most my questions on tanks.

If LB has a big budget and wants more tanks, definitely check out the

Futaba 9CAP radio on 75. It's PCM so your tanks will like it more. It's 9 channels for LB-tank/semi-realism-fun. And then you can ditch the Tamiya channel expanders or whatever they sell so that on your semi, coupling is its own channel, etcetc. Should be interesting. The 4EXA doesn't have much model memory either.

Wouldn't mind getting that, but it does not have analog trim, which makes working w/ the MFU difficult..... [&:]

The kit arrives this Wednesday...

No radio has been ordered yet.. LOL.. still doing some research...

Bearings (76 of them, LOL!) will come from Hong Kong.. so that's probably a couple of weeks..

Don't plan to do any hop-ups really.. it has everything as is..

It will be a slow project, I am sure.. I still need to figure out what to do w/ the paint job.. [&:]

On the other hand, the Scalpel Pro kit comes in today.. BUT, I am missing the 3PKS, since I plan to put the 2.4GHz RX in the Scalpel...

If you look under frequency availability they list 11-60 for air and 61-90 surface.

Nice.. didn't realize that.. I guess I was looking at the 4EXA because it has 4-model memory....

So that's good for 2 tanks, a F-350, and a semi..

Hee hee...

So that's good for 2 tanks, a F-350, and a semi..
[&:] Hehe I'd go for 2 semis, an F350 and a tank. Not complicated enough.

I need to find plastic tracks for my Sherman, these stock metal tracks are crap, I mean they can withstand abuse but like to walk off, or even just fall off the sproket when I turn to fast, or sharply. I've tried tightening them, loosening them, nothing.[:@]

Nah, this is for scale / realistic fun.. No point of using any BL setup.. silver can or Sport Tune would be plenty.. although I'd prefer something that has no advanced timing...

With the Leo's drivetrain, it is setup so one motor powers the forward / reverse, and the other motor does duty for turning.. (I'd need to study how they do that, LOL!)

So you can probably put the BL for the forward / reverse duty...

LOL.. it'd be pretty hard integration w/ the DMD, though.. split the signal so it controls the BL ESC somehow.. LOL!!

I will do that w/ a Blizzard EP, how's that?! I'd put a BL in that.... but not the Leo 2 A6!

Well, when you chose a tank to try you certainly chose the best Tamiya has to offer! That thing flies compared to the WWII tanks (naturally) and the barrel fully traverses in 9 seconds (you probably know that). A guy at my tank club drives one and they are incredible. The best upgrade, other than bearings is the barrel stabilizer, IMO.

You should post this in the tank forum too, since they will be a great source of information. There are also other Leo builds and modification threads there if you feel like searching for them. I'm looking forward to your build! [sm=thumbup.gif]
