I was thinking of how to make 1/16 sand bags easily, what method are you using?

Sandbags...

Guy on German eBay was selling a hundred empty bags for sand for 8 euro. Fill 'em yourself with sand, or fine clumping cat litter and wet 'em to get 'em to 'sit' right... Coarse clay powder would also do in a pinch, or coarse railroad hydrocal (much lighter than the other options, and moldable like the cat litter)

I started a transaction, but he would not supply payment options, so I had to cancel my auction bid. Anyone in Germany able to 'secure' a few hundred for me?

Build-a-Rama also makes 'em, and you may get a discount in bulk if you talk to them. I have theirs, and they are fabulous.

Another option is the local high school's Home Economics dept. You might be able to get 'em to make a load for a 'donation' to the school. Very simple for any student who understands a sewing machine, and would be good for a teacher as an 'extra marks' project. I'd have made my own, but no access to a stitcher...

Also a way to get interested club members involved in the 'battlefield'... can use the same skills for making scale campaign tents and custom tarps/covers for your vehicles (like the storage ones ya buy for 1:1 cars) I've done this before for my large boats to keep the dust off (a 52" boat won't quite fit in a tool box...)

RE sandbags

http://www.goodstufftogo.net/html/ca...html?Catid=380

or what I do is get some 21/2 oe 3" hessian material, roll it into a 21mm tube and glue it, cut to them @ 47mm long, fill them with sea sand or salt and hand stitch the open end closed.

I'll ask Willy... if not, mebbe Stern is willing to oblige us? Lemme make sure I can still find the guy on eBay.de... if he's quit, no sense in wasting time, eh?

Tiger233:

That gets us a general page, you wanna give us a category and sub-category title? I tried the 1:18 XD and saw nothing that applied... also the Supplies sections...

I used sculpy to make my sandbags for my Pershing and for earlier pieces of terrain.

Yep is it pink 1 1/2 foam insulation...held together with toothpicks and then hot glued.

Dennis

ERF - sorry Tiger233.

I thought ya were referring to a supply of the hessian.

Those are the ones I mentioned. I got mine through a friend in the US, he ordered direct from www.Build-A-Rama.com. As the total order to him was over $100 US, it shipped free to him, and then he brown-box'd it to me to save me on Customs. Also last time I checked, BaR takes PayPal (just opened a shopping cart, and it blipped PayPal) and GoodStuff does not. The suck is - BaR is sold out of baggies!

I did find the former German baggie seller, and ANOTHER new seller, though he is selling half as many for a bit more.

If I knew anyone with some time to spare and a sewing machine, I'd ask 'em to 'begin a production line" to initiate sales on this side of the border... but sadly I don't. I could ask my Italian tailor buddy (does my dress-denims with double-roll cuffs for $5 a pop) but I doubt the prices could match the German ones. If I were still in classes at the local college I'd hit up one of the profs there.

In bulk makin 'em is easy. You essentially cross-hatching stitch a pair of sheets back to back in a set spacing pattern (I could map out a patter for anyone with the time and a machjine) then just dab white glue spots at points to keep the stitching from unravelling when you cut the sheets apart. Its like cutting a mint-printed sheet of dollar bills apart... (or the display-sheets of hockey/baseball/whatever cards)

The flour-sacking material I found for the camo tarps/duffels/rucksacks/etc would be perfect, and a 24"x36" sheet would make quite a few bags at $2 a sheet. I'm tempted to see if I can find one of those pocket-stitch machines and give it a shot myself.

Tiger233:

Scan for " säcke panzer " and they will pop up. 260120205064 - 100 sacks for 9.99 euros BiN , 120125134822 is for 50 sacks at 9.50 euros BiN.

Both want bank transfers (as common over there as PayPal is over here) but ih_ish will take cash. My bank charges $45 for a transfer to Germany (done it ONCE before) and its NOT worth it.

Any German tankers willing to assist?
