Using 1/16 scale tanks on sand
Hi everyone,
It is quite obvious that you guys do not worry too much about the do's and don'ts written in the instruction booklets, and operate your r/c tanks where you like. I have seen the threads on driving through water but what about sand? Is this to be avoided at all costs or are there precautions that need to be taken before use in dry dusty conditions.

Drive mine mostly in sugar sand. Tiger and PZIII hulls need to be sealed and I put covers over the gearboxes. Search the forum for bunches of how tos and pictures.

the dirt here is that black packed type, very bad for pershing style tracks. it just picks it up and plugs it up. would love to get a load of sugar sand!

The finer the sand the better, and more to scale.
I wish we had beaches out here in Colorado.
The sand we have at lakes, and from the remains of inland seas is pretty gritty. Even with a 1/8 scale tank, I have trouble with small stones getting caught in the idler wheel.

Someone just mentioned covers for the gear box. Can anyone provide the like to the thread that covers this. Are there any other options for stopping sand getting inside the Tank. I presume you can put tape on the battery box but what else needs doing?

The search feature is your friend Larry. There are dozens of photos and how tos on sealing up the Tiger hull and gearboxes.
Simplest method for the gearbox is to cut up a plastic soda bottle and whip out the hair dryer until you bend it into place. I like the look of styrene myself, still bent with the hair dryer or soldering iron for heat!

Gearbox cover are more intended to avoid spraying lubrication oil on the boards. It is better to seal the hull against dust/sand. In my tiger I left the motor grills opened to air (used paper filters under them) to allow cooling.

RE: Using 1/16 scale tanks on sand
I am actually in the process of turning my front garden/yard ( American friendly writing ) into a desert playground for my tanks. In particular the 1/6 Tiger but I do intend to use the 1/16's on it too.
I think it just looks great when the sand and dust gets kicked out at the rear of the tracks, to me there's no better terrain but then it's probably not too tank friendly, I'll find that out soon enough
