Default Desert Rat Sherman build

My next (actually continuing) build-elect will be the Eighth Army Sherman to counter all those DAK PZ III, PZ IV, and Tiger Projects. A tall order.

I actually started this build over a year ago but funds and interest were a little thin. Now funds are a little thin but my interest is rekindled by the combination of a new book I have purchased, Patton being on cable last night, and I found the complete series of Rat Patrol on Netflix.

Project began with a second Hand Nick Aguilar cast hull. I asked him for one of his older molds in any condition as extensive modifications to the front glacis and transmission were in order. I got a three piece trasmission cover and early mantlet from Tiff Williams, and a gun barrel from Brass Barrels out of Vegas. All these aquisitions were well over a year ago so please don't ask if they are still available, I do not know.

Also purchased was a Formations 1/35 resin conversion kit for reference.

The initial British Shermans were taken from the US Second Armored Division and shipped to England in early 1942. Most examples were early M4A1 cast hulls with m-3 bogies and Direct vision view ports on the front hull.

My first task is to redo the hatches and add the Direct vision slots. Here we go......

lots of work, but will be worth the effort. Can't survive without super glue and green putty. Going to do the early turret and 3 piece tranny?

Didn't read all of it, huh? "I got a three piece trasmission cover and early mantlet from Tiff Williams, and a gun barrel from Brass Barrels out of Vegas."

ooooo kayyy [:-]

speed reading didn't shift down...too engrossed in the photos. Gonna be nice. What do you think of the Formations models? I've done a zillion 1;35s but never checked out those resin things. Doing museum stuff, had to stick pretty close to Tammy and Dragon or occasionally AFV..budget and cost had a lot to do with procuring models, so had to scratch build a lot from old Revell or Renwall junk. [&:] Many resin models are made to build as they designed, not to the configuration I wanted. Formations good to work with and detailing good?

More work on front hatches and direct vision slits. Used a bunch of squadron putty and CA to make it all work.

The formations stuff is awesome. I have met Rob before and his stuff is always top notch. His variety is a must for the rivet counters and if you buy a few items he sometimes adds extra goodies.

One more update before bed. Completed initial direct vision ports and piled on the related parts to see how it looks so far. I am expecting some Tamiya parts in the mail so I can work on the transmission cover and straighten out that warped hull. One added detail on this project will be a final drive cover to fix the look of the front end.

That takes some talent and patience! Great work so far!

Has Nick ever mentioned making the earlier M4A1 hulls?

We have discussed the prospect recently and it is a possible, but unlikely until 2009. I am also working on an early welded hull project so by law if you scratchbuild it, it will come out in a kit two weeks after you are done.

I am including some of the older pics of my turret mods. I had to replace the engine deck with the styrene one from my original Sherman build.

Low bustle turret, filled in loaders hatch and added original gun mount, mantlet, and rotor shield. The split hatch. barrel, and gun mount came from SCATs Ron Bair. I traded him some parts and DAK t-shirt for 'em. The hatch is closer to the original split hatch, Nicks is the later lower profile version.

Making a 3 piece transmission fit from Shapeways. Grinding the HL gear boxes down. Had a set of sand skirts from an old parts box collection from somewhere. I am making it work!
