Winter Fun

I've knocked the quality of my HL Tanks quite a bit but I'll say one thing for them, they are a lot of fun to clank around in the snow. I had my Tiger I ploughing right through the snow this afternoon. It never bogged down or clogged up once. I guess the conditions were just right but I'd never have attempted that with a more expensive tank!

It is amazing how well the tanks do in the snow. The HL tanks have a leg up since they are so light. Please post some pix and video of your tanks in the snow. We had or first NEAD battle day in the now in December of 2009. It was only a few inches and it melted fast as the sun rose but we had a load of fun while it lasted. We are doing it again this Sunday here in northern NJ. Stay tuned for some pix and vids from us. Please psot some of your outing.

When we tried it last Saturday at Firemantim's, it was not quite cold enough, I think.

In spite of acclimatization, we had problems with snow sticking to the tracks.

In this area, the ground resists freezing and if it is in the high 20F degree range and the sun is out, the snow gets "sticky"

However, it has been colder her the last few days and the snow has more of a powder texture, I expect that would be much better than it was on Jan. 8th.

Try some aerosol furniture polish on the bottom of the tank and on the tracks to keep the snow from sticking (just like we use for skiing). DO NOT use WD 40. If you have black/dark tracks they will get warm sitting in the sun and attract snow quicker. Compressed air is the best thing to clear snow packed tracks. Let me know how you make out.

I got my Panzer IV and Stug III out for a run today in the snow. Both worked great. Videos will be coming. The winterketten makes a big difference in the tanks performance in the snow.

Nice pics JTM... I wish I lived closer to you ~ would love some airbrush lessons! Your motor pool is loaded with some of the finest paint jobs I've seen.

Ya, awesome work John. I imagine that the Winterketten will keep snow accumulation from out of the sprockets and idlers.

Hi John.
Do you know how to remove the pin from winterketten? I have one pair of winterketten, but It is too long.

(I think) there is a lip on the pin (on the inner side of the track ( think I used a knife to pry the pin out a bit then grabbed it with a pair of plyers)

Outstanding! I am sold!

I did not see any snow get stuck in the sprockets on either tank. This is the answer I have been looking for so that I can have a winter runner.

Where did you get the Winterketten from?

The Winterketten tracks are not a cure all for snow. I have had the snow build-up in the drive sprocket to the point that the sprocket teeth do not touch the tracks. This will stop the tank's progress till it is cleaned out or melts. Still, they are better than stock metal tracks.
