Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
Hi Guys
I like to get one of the tamyia 1/16 scale r/c tanks I am undecided between Panzer IV and the Panther Which one do you think is better or preferable of the two? I would like if possible to get some expert opinions about this tanks Thanks very much for your much appreciated reply |
RE: Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
Pick one and go for it. They are both great runners. I have heard no complaints on either tank from anyone.

RE: Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
Ditto. More quality detail parts available for the Panther, but both tanks are outstanding runners.

The Panther G is the best Tamiya tank IMHO. It has been my main IR battler for several years. I have only worn out the right gear box and one elevation unit (total costs $65). I have owned all the FO Tamiya tanks except the Panzer IV. Which I hope to pick-up or win from Karen at the Extravagaza at the end of the month. Only one guy there, Will, has finished a Pzr IV for the battlefield. He has done very well with it the past 3 battles. I know Daryl & Brett have them too, but they have not finished them yet. I can't wait to see what they do with theirs.

RE: Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
My 2 cents....the Pz4 is a great tank but it is hard to mount the 3 to 1 boxes in it if you go in that direction.

RE: Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
U-boat,
I have built the Panzer IV and it is a good runner out of the box, and even a great battling IR tank. I did replace the stock TUs with Impact ones and rebuilt them with the Tamiya gears, and added ball bearings on the shafts with stock motors and 10T pinion gears. It is scale speed and runs metal Impact Tracks. There is a build thread on this forum: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_95..._1/key_/tm.htm I hope you enjoy the thread, I do have the Panther Kit but have not built it yet. So i can not say how it will build out, but I know a lot of guys that have them and swear by them. But I like the little Panzer IV it is a great kit to build. Just my 2 cents. Will |

RE: Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
I've got both PZ4 and a Panther. My PZ4 is much more reliable than my Panther. Still, others say the Panther works great. Maybe theirs do.
I can say this...Tamiya finally got the traverse right when they designed the PZ4. Robust and reliable traverse. Of course if you IR battle them you'll have a medium vs. heavy...but that is another story. |
RE: Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
Jeff, what is different with the Traverse in the PzIV?
|
RE: Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
Tamiya redesigned the traverse on the PZ4, and it's more comparable to a HL traverse system now. The turret ring is attached to the turret bottom through the upper hull...meaning the turret ring gets installed AFTER you mount the turret on the upper hull. Then you secure the turret ring through the upper hull to the turret with screws...just like a HL. There's no popping off the turret from the upper hull of a PZ4 like all other Tamiyas (excluding the Leo 2 of course). To get the turret off a PZ4, you've got to remove the turret ring screws after you remove the upper hull, just like with a HL. I was impressed. It's quite robust and reliable.

RE: Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
Well, that is a good thing to know. I definitelty feel the turret rotations ystem on my Perhsing is the weakest point in the tank. I like the PzIV. I may buy one myself. Thanks for the explanation on this thing.

RE: Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
2 cents:
Both are good kits, though the Panther had some serious teething problems when first released. I found the Pz4 is much easier to rc setup than the Panther G, but with some effort the Panther can be setup to operate very well too. If you build the Panther I would recommend the Impact Glacis Plate Guides, Impact tracks and drive sprockets, the Daryl Turner metal gearbox mount brace, Daryl Turner metal elevation arm and the road wheel bearings from Impact as the basic aids to get the Panther running good. Also remove and CA glue solid the black clutch gears in the elevation and turret rotation units and re-install said gears. As to the Panzer IV modifications, I used the Impact late tracks, the Daryl Turner metal gearbox mount brace, Daryl Turner metal elevation arm and removed and then CA glued solid the black clutch gears in the elevation and turret rotation units. I left the gear boxes stock, the scale speed of the Pz4 model is pretty good without any modifications. So, depending on your budget, both are very good kits, but you might spend a couple of bucks more to get the Panther setup to run as well as the Pz4. And don't forget the Jagdpanther, it is a pretty cool kit too. John |

WOW John your panzer division looks really cool in those pics thanks again stef |
RE: Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
I would go with the Panzer IV if my limited experience is worth anything.

RE: Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
I manage to see the tamiya panzer 4 instructions manual but no painting guide is conteined in it
Does painting instructions come in a different leaflet? were can i possibly see this instructions guide? thanks for your reply |
RE: Tamyia panzer IV vs Panther question
Painting guides aka "finishing guide" is a separate document. The Pz4 kit comes with the assembly instructions, a DMD manual, and a finishing guide.
