Tamiya Leo 1A4 builtup

Hi! everyone, I just purchase a new Tamiya Tank Leo 1A4 (display unit)and plan on converting this beast to a full rc controlled tank. So far I have read numerous threats on this type of conversion as far as the turret rotating and gun elevation , also for the gear box drive Iwill be using a jagpanther drive witch seem to be the answer. There is one thing that I have not seen done is the gun recoil turret action, and I am asking if someone have that done in the pass and was it possible to convert on this tank with any success ??

Yes, my leopard 1 is equipped with Elmod, so I used a servo for the recoil. However, if you are going to use say Tamiya KV-1 electronics, the tamiya recoil unit would be the way to go. You would have to make up a bracket to attach to the gun mantlet to mount it, but that should not be too difficult to do.

I do not have any pictures of the servo setup in mine. Are you using tamiya electronics, or something else?</p>

Ok, then the setup you want is going to be different than mine. I would suggest buying a tmaiya recoil unit from the AAF tank museum and then making your own recoil stay to mount it to the turret. There is plenty of room inside that turret to make everything work nicely.
I know a couple of guys here built these tanks already...Perhaps C4Star will chime in. I think he used tmaiya electronics to build his leo.

Hello,

My first Leo build not have recoil, but this second build will. This is a preview look and next month I will have more how to photos to post showing the trunnion, etc., as work on this Leopard 1 A4 progresses. The effort uses the Tamiya Pershing recoil unit with aluminum prototype parts fabricated by Daryl Turner. Pretty sure Daryl Turner will offer a Leo recoil kit for the Leo Turret, a trunnion setup, plus a semi built metal barrel parts kit (flash capable). I believe DT will also offer some type of spring loaded return rear idler system, gearbox mount brace and perhaps a how to on adding bearings to the Tamiya Leo A4's kit road wheels.

Guys...

As Tamiya is being a TAD slow on posting the sprue designators for the new 1A4 release, anyone having the kit care to pose pics of the sprues, and their 7-digit order-identifiers? Or if anyone's done up a PDF of the manual yet with the parts pages, I'd appreciate a copy.

Thanks,
WhiteWolf

Joe:

I know JR-RC has some of the sprues... but they aren't thr ones I'm looking for, and I'm probably gonna be ordering on-continent for various reasons (like it'll cost enough getting a T55 here from Asia, dammit!) and was looking to bulk-out a small order of 2A6 parts (my Kitty2 refit for the saggy turret)

Anyone know of someone that has a comparison chart, aka, " old A sprue = 1234567 " kinda thing? Even a few decent-res images of the parts-pages from the static kit would be appreciated (or a 300 dpi scan, perhaps?)

Thanks.

The old and new kit did not come with manual with spruce pages with part numbers they just say A,B,C,D and so on .
The spruce still in the plastic bags I have on the new release have only letters for the spruce and then each part has a number to match whats on the manual but no spruce order part number to just order the spruce.
The only part numbers on back of manual are for parts in the metal parts bags screws and washers drive sprockets stuff like that .

Bowlman:

They didn't add new 7-digit numbers for the new sprues? Thats unusual... they did for the Sherman re-release. Is the manual just a copy of the old one?

WHOOPS... they did Digitize 'em. But they are EIGHT digits And finally got a manual up: [link=http://www.tamiyausa.com/pdf/manuals/36207ml.pdf]Leo 1A4 manual - #36207[/link]

Thanks for those who tried to help... if you need help finding the #'s, its on the last page, bottom right corner, the " After Market Service Card " area. The Left portion is for the Japanese patrons, the right for us, all there right in English:

I'm trying to upload a grab from the PDF, but dunno how to get the uploaded image to show... Ah, there the list is. Word used to OCR a text-grab automatically, now it has to go through Office's 'Document Imaging'. Still can't get it to see multiple spaces or tabs. Anyone wanting a formatted TXT or DOC file, lemme know my PM or email.

Ah, finally got it to work:

WhiteWolf thanks for the breakdown on the parts .

Hey, no sweat.

I checked the TamiyaUSA page, just in case they'd posted a manual page, like they are doing for others (seeing as we're gonna do it ANYWAY w/o their permission) and hey-presto, there it was. I noted only two relevant changes that may mean a pain-in-the-butt for me if Iupgrade my Leo's... the turret roller mounts on the hull, the turret gear-ring mount-tabs on the turret bottom, and the DMD-type gearbox mount holes (easily drilled)

I could add the turret tabs and the traverse rollers - both are do-able but not simply, but they ~are~ cheaper than replacing the hull and its detailing, ditto the turret parts.

I'm just surprised they dinna mod the backside of the mantlet for a Pershing-like bolt-on to allow for elevation. Again, it can be scratched... *shrug*

I sent the listing on to Karen for the AAF PX, just in case people ask.

I will most likely do like im doing to my Porsche KT is add the turret ring assy that 35rctank.com made for me it cost $35.00 with shipping for the 1974 Leo A4 and I got the gearboxes and mounting plate from AFV Models for it also .
