KV-2 WIP

After completing myKT, I haven't really been doing alot.I decided thatI am not very happy with my KV-1 and wanted to do something ifferent with it.So, after obtaining a Juwa turret from a member, I decided that I may as well get started on it. First I drilled out the mantlet and added a 5/8" brass sleeve for the barrel to ride on.I made a brracket for the tamiya recoil unit from brass and bought a Tamiya barrel off ebay. I realized that the parts sprue needed for the parts to secure the barrel to the recoil unit are around 50 bucks. Well, I got cheap and made my own.A piece of 1/2" brass tube cut to the same length as the end of the barrel. This piece was then slid over the barrel and I ued a punch to dimple the brass where the 2 holes are in the barrel. It is a perfect fit. I then soldered another piece of brass to this and drilled a hole to screw it into the recoil unit. After testing it, all is working great. I am waiting for some more parts to arrive but will update here whenI get them in.

Thanks man. I am waiting to get my T-34 back from Daryl at the moment, so I thought I may as well start on t his thing. The T-34 is a rgeat looking tank, but the model requires a lot of TLC to get it up to standard as a runner.

i'm up for the challenge...lol i have a small metal break i may put a aluminum insert inside to give it strength i heard it may need it, hows that KingTiger you get anymore shots of it it the field

RE: KV-2 WIP

Yes, the inserts will be of use to the T34. But, the weak spot is the gearboxes as and so is the suspension. It can be made into a great runner though. Go for it!
The KT is just fine, sitting on the shelf LOL. I have not yet been out anyplace with it to get pics...

RE: KV-2 WIP

Ok, so today I played around a little more with the main gun assembly. I decided to try something different here and took an emitter tube and glued in the LED then slid it up through the barrel assembly. I then cut strips of 1mm fiber optic cable and glued them all around the outside of the emitter tube and pushed it back into the front of the barrel. I then slid the high intensity flash unit up through the rear of the barrel and gave it a try. It works great. The flash is visible around the barrel and the IR fires from the inside of the barrel.

Looking good...you going to mount this turret on your KV-1?  Or, get another HL KV and convert it?

Thanks guys. This will be mounted on my curecnt KV-1. I wanted to bild something a little bit different, and this should work nicely. The canon flash works great, as does the emitter. I will get some video for you when it's done.

I figured out what I wanted to do for elevation and depression on this thing. I made a slide from a piece of brass channel and CA'd it to the recoil unit. I then extended the elevation arm on the unit to get more range and glued that in place. I know...It ain't very pretty, but it is quite functional. I also added the commanders hatch and drilled through the turret for the battle unit installation.
I will make the handles for the sideas of the turret, probably from brass rods in the coming days and then begin the paint on it.

Ok, so I had some time to make the handles and install....Also drilled out the base to route the wiring through and added the mounting hardware for the turret ring gear.

Looking good. I noticed that your commander's cupola is silver. Is that the metal one from AsiaTam? Do you have any pictures that show the center line of the hatches compared to the front vision slit? I ask because it looks like it is lined up correctly. The stock plastic one from HL is twisted a little to the side and I ruined mine trying to straighten it.

TIA

Thank you. Yes, this is the metal version purchased from rctankwars. It is corrected, but still off justa  hair. I will get a pic or two for you and post it up. I think it is a great improvement over the plastic version, as the hatches will not break so easily while installing or removing the apple....

Shaker, it never ceases to amaze me the evolution of your building skills in the last 18 odd months. How well I remember your first trepidations at painting a few details on an HL, and now look at you. Very well done job on this one, with some quite useful innovations. The slide for elevatio is something my grizzled old brain never thought of. Good job!

yellowshaker 08-06-2011 09:14 PM

RE: KV-2 WIP

Thanks Sev. The slide came afrter the first 30 odd tries at making elevation workable in this thing. The turret inside is narrow and I found it challenging to work with. I still need to mount the plug ofr the apple, but that is on order and should arrive soon.
I well rememeber my humble beginnings into the wonderful world of tanks. Talk about not knowing a thing. That was me. I have watched build carefully and learned from all of you here. Of course, I still have a ways to go, but making progress in the skill department.
This turret got it's first coat tonight, and when I have some time I will begin the hairspray application to complete the whitewash and then some little details and it should be ready to get in the fight. I am having a blast with this thing.

Awesome work...the second photo...could you angle it so that you see the vision port and the center line of the hatches? The line made by where the hatches close (meet each other) should bisect the front vision port.

Thanks.

shucks...that's a direct casting of the plastic version. From the other angles, it looked they had corrected that when they did the casting. How hard would it be to drill out the new holes for the hinges to shift them around?

It should look like the attached pic.

Thanks for taking and posting the photos.
