Winter tanking is here!
1 Attachment(s)
Winter came last night at 10:30 Mtn. time... now the days are getting longer.
I have been tanking in snow for almost two months now, with 4 more months of snow fun to go before mud season comes. This is the first winter for both the Leopard and the Panther G. Both have run in some snow and so far the Panther can run circles around the Leo. I am working on geting the Leo to be a better snow runner but so far it clogs up the drive sproket and stops with just a little snow. Perhaps metal tracks would help, I'm running the stock tracks on the Leo, and the Panther has metal tracks. When funds permit, I plan to get the metal tracks with grousers for the Leo. Anyone with a Leo have any tricks to share? Post any snow pix you have here to share with everyone. The first picture was taken on 10/ 27/11... the last one this week. All the pix are at the same location. <br type="_moz" /> |

RE: Winter tanking is here!
Here is where you can get them and they are a very reliable source for parts and tracks as well. Sometimes they have stuff on Ebay as well. I have purchased Panzer III and Panther tracks from them and have had no problems with shipping from them to the U.S. They also have some bearing sets and other hop ups for the Tamiya kits as well.

Impact does not have those tracks listed on their website currently, you might email them about availability. You can also try Kenny Kong's website http://www.kennysmodeltank.com/page/..._16/page1.html Steve |
RE: Winter tanking is here!
The few times we get snow in Georgia (USA) I try to get my tanks out in the snow. I always had problems with snow clogging up the road wheels and sprockets. Then a tank buddy told me to leave my tanks outside on the porch for a while so the road wheels, treads and sprockets cool down to the outside air temps. It worked and then I was able to run in the snow. Works best when the temps are below 30 degrees. Above that melting and clogging occur.
I'm thinking metal tracks cool down quicker compared to plastic tracks. |
RE: Winter tanking is here!
I love the paint jobs on both your tanks. I think I will do my Panther like yours, but with a base of green rather than yellow. Well done! There is no way I could do a 300+ hour paint job on my Leo...

RE: Winter tanking is here!
Thanks. I'm never doing a digi camo again, it's too much work.
I have been looking around and found this place this morning. http://www.axels-modellbau-shop.de/k...ale::6949.html Anybody order from them? How easy are they to deal with? I don't speak German, do they speak English? I like the price... and I think I can deduct the %19 VAT. When the dust settles from the holladays, I would like to order these. |
RE: Winter tanking is here!
I have purchased parts from them before and they are reliable. If you have questions e-mail them they reply in English. Sorry about the Mitsoal site. I should have checked to see if they still had the tracks in stock. They still have a lot of cool stuff though.

Yup Axel's is reliable but very expensive if it's going to be shipped across the pond. Here's a couple pics of my Porsche KT from
2005. |
RE: Winter tanking is here!
Nice Tanks, good picture composition. I can't beleive how warm it is here this year, Another day of temperatures above freezing, and not very good snow days for RC tanks
|
RE: Winter tanking is here!
Brett, do you still have that KT?

You know what sucks? Living in Canada without any snow! The weather forecast for Toronto on Christmas day is sunny. What the hell!I got one night with my Bulldog in the snow. Even bought metal tracks for it. Dang you Global warming!!!!!

RE: Winter tanking is here!
Yup still have it Jim, ran it at the NEAD snowy fun run last Dec.
|
RE: Winter tanking is here!
I like that snow camo on the KT, is that historical or your idea? It's a very cool look.
|
RE: Winter tanking is here!
Not historical at all. I built that guy back in '95 before I really researched anything, as you can tell on the zim/paint job. It was brought back to the depot in 2003 to be made full option.

RE: Winter tanking is here!
I see... well it looks cool.
and for you folks complaining about warm weather!?!?! It's suposed to be 10 below zero here tonight! Thats about -22 for you guys up north. Too cold for tanking. |

It's just a stock HL with a few off the shelf mods. I do have an agreement with Phil at RCtankwars to only send me grey, non camo tanks if he can so I can paint them.
Lets see... 3:1 gears extra LED MG in the mantle metal tracks and sproket adjustable idler mount side skirts ( most of the hangers have broken off already ) period correct headlight engine screens ( made from the screen door my kids broke ) glass in periscopes ( made from the clear packing plastic my model RR came in ) workable gun travel lock ( drilled so a pzkw 3 track pin works as a hinge pin ) Scale " dummy " antenna ( made from the stock HL antenna ) moved to proper spot Jacking block is real wood TC sight custom 3 color paint job ( hold airbrush in one hand, cocktail in other hand ) spray, sip, spray, sip, etc... stuff I wanted to do but was too lazy... spare track mounts ( part way done ) opening lids on storage bins exhust support brackets perhaps some day...<br type="_moz" /> |
RE: Winter tanking is here!
Thanks for the info on that,I thought it was a Tamiya. Little do I know lol. Do you see an SLU in the future for it? As far as painting I might have to try your technique, airbrush in one hand and Wild Turkey (American Honey) in the other. :D

I have purchased Panzer III and Panther tracks from them and have had no problems with shipping from them to the U.S. They also have some bearing sets and other hop ups for the Tamiya kits as well. http://www.mitosal.com/ I Love the products... but HATE (not a word it throw about freely mind you) their policies on shipping costs at Mitosal. They are a total rip-off on shipping. I won an Ebay auction for 3:1 Impact gearboxes/TUs and the shipping for them was $55 (WOW). I then wanted to buy about 8 or so more items from the Mitosal website. The total was about $650 of which they wanted $160+ for shipping alone. They wanted $7 shipping for EACH pair of pinion gears. You know....the ones the size of the end of your pinky finger. When I questioned them on the individual shipping prices and lack of combined shipping the told me "that was how we make our money". Gee, I thought they sold tank parts for a business??? I then cancelled the order for $350 in additional parts I wanted and then they banned me from buying from them on Ebay. I do like their products, but I don't like how they treat people and run the business. Charge a realistic price for your item and true shipping costs. It just is not right otherwise! |
