After reading an eariler thread on Bulldog stuff. I decided to do what Pattoncommander suggested and fix up the periscopes "viewing the birds"

RE: Fixing M41 inaccuracies
Hi
I did mine as well. Rule of thumb, make sure that the periscopes are set low enough to clear the drivers hatch if it were swung forward to open. Harle |

You could have done it easier. The HL Periscopes can be pulled straight out....simply sand/file the backs until they sit straight and slide them back in. The second photo shows the driver's periscope mounts in our Museum 41 before I installed home made plexiglass mockups (without the IR scope.) The mounts have a top which hangs over the front and sides to cut down on glare. You cut away too much, but this can be easilly rebuilt. I can get you close up shots if you need them.
Harle; the persicopes slide into boxlike mounts held by spring clamps..(much like jeep hood latches)...which have solid tops. There's no way that the scopes can extend to where they block hatch movement. Bill |

U got it man, looks good. Going to add a travel lock?

RE: Fixing M41 inaccuracies
I'd love to. Except, just getting into this hobby and any hobby, Ihave no idea how you guys create all those accessories or stuff for your tanks. What i mean is molds and stuff.

RE: Fixing M41 inaccuracies
sometimes it's not a matter of making something
sometimes being a scavenger like me ...lol,sometimes you find a piece or part from other things that look like the part you need or maybe someone in the club can make one for ya if one knew what it looked like and the size |
RE: Fixing M41 inaccuracies
This is where Pattoncommander is the go to guy http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif Do you happen to have a picture or "blueprints" of a Bulldog Travellock?</p> |
RE: Fixing M41 inaccuracies
It looks really good. Keep it up!

Hi Tetris Monk
A variation on the drivers periscopes fix - http://hobbyhavoc.com/forum/index.php?topic=239.15 - replies 18, 21 & 22. I also made some templates for various parts, including part of the travel lock - http://www.hobbyhavoc.com/oldhavoc/i...p?topic=1911.0 - which may be of use. One day I'll repeat the GTL & do a how to thread. A couple of pics of my one - early pattern - http://hobbyhavoc.com/forum/index.php?topic=180.0 Mal |

No biggy....NEVER throw away old tank or model parts....never know when that odd looking piece will be the exact thing you need. The travel lock can be an easy scratch build.. Use standard sheet styrene or any of the L shape or I beams from any hobby shop.
The first one may be a mess...but the next will be better. We all learn by improving a screw-up. Someone had a post a while ago with a working travel lock, but not many of us with 1;16 scale use the gun travel lock much. Just as good to have it laying down on the rear. A styrene I beam is just right for heating up and bending into the basic shape...then sanding and adding the locking clamp..easy make by cutting a styrene tube in half for the basic. Good luck.. Here's a couple photos. Bill Mal...really nice looking travel lock.. |
RE: Fixing M41 inaccuracies
how would the Barrel fit in there is it angled towards the turret if it's straight i don't see how the gun would go into it

Airbrushler: the M41 was a little different in that it didn't lock the gun with the turret straight back. Instead, it traveled with the turret slightly turned. |
RE: Fixing M41 inaccuracies
that's what i was wondering in the pic it looks like the lock is straght but it may be the angle of the picture is the lock actually on an angle facingtowards the turret

The M-41 is a sort of odd-ball on the travel lock position..With the gun tube (in armor, guns don't have barrels) in traveling position, the turret is traversed where the gun is hanging over the left rear . This leaves room for the driver the enter/exit his hatch without going through the turret hatches. The M-26-46-47 had a narrower, angled turret overhang with plenty of room, but the 41 was smaller with a wider, lower overhang. The hatch cover was also unusal in that it lifted up about 4 inches and slid sideways to lock down on the three legs standing on the front. The 48 required the driver entering through the turret but had a similar hatch cover. .

RE: Fixing M41 inaccuracies
As the last set of pictures shows, the transport lock was angled to the turret. Great pictures and I know they had fun getting that sucker out!

Here are some pictures of how I build a travel lock and I opened the drivers hatch and made it work, not hard to do.

RE: Fixing M41 inaccuracies
I was think of relocating my power switch to under the hatch (just haven'tgotten around to it yet).I was wondering if the hatch is simply glued on from the factory(which is what it looks like)or is it molded on and have to becut off?

It's molded on, so I used a razor saw and cut it off, sewing wound not work for this type of removal, sanding is required, and a brass or plastic post was uses so it will swing.
Pattoncomander, it is not red on the inside that is just some primer I used.http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif Gary Sorry about the double pics, not sure why it did that. RE: Fixing M41 inaccuracies
Hi Guys
Glad you like the GTL, made it out of Brass & bog (the cast ribbing part), so it's a pretty solid piece. Not sure about making them for sale, I'm pretty slow at making stuff, will think about it. Re the Drivers hatch, I drilled mine out, then dremeled off the rest with a sanding drum. Made new hatch from sheet styrene, handle from staple, hinge post from a 1" panel pin - small nail. Inside the vehicle I fitted a piece of steel plate - flashing plate - with a hole drilled through for the nail to go through, then added a small spring to the nail, then placed a short piece of brass tube to the nail to retain the spring. That way the hatch is pulled down, & needs to be pulled up & swung to open. Unfortunately I don't have pics of all this - but here it is completed - http://www.hobbyhavoc.com/oldhavoc/i...?topic=725.180 - replies 182, 184, 187 & 191, plus some other bits I did. Mal |
RE: Fixing M41 inaccuracies
WOW...that's a clean set-up....I really like that! Glad to see I'm not the only M-41 fanatic here lol...you guys are making me look like a light-weight(and I've done a bunch of stuff to mine already) .....http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ssed_smile.gif

RE: Fixing M41 inaccuracies
Ok. First off HDBeast I wanna buy a Travel lock off you. Would you be able to make a spare?
Second, in regards to styrene is there a thread or website or something on how to make stuff out of styrene. That seems to be the go-to material (and filler) to molding and making add-ons. Third, if I learn how styrene works I want to make a separate top for my Bulldog (or get a second)and do a DK-1 (I wanna start my very own scratch-build/modhttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...ssed_smile.gif) |
