RE: Ford CMP Gun Tractor build
heres the chassis built from brass and the wheels and rear axle modded to look better and have the wheelbase at the correctish width
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...adbuild117.jpg http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...adbuild116.jpg http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...adbuild118.jpg rear axle and one side done just a wheel hub with fake bolts to add to the depth the hub end is from an old pershing wheel http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...adbuild115.jpg http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...adbuild113.jpg the otherside showing the parts needed from the halftrack http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...adbuild114.jpg installed rear axle showing the rough placement a set of rear leaf springs will be made to give a bit of movement here and also achieve the correct wheel height http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...adbuild112.jpg http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...adbuild110.jpg front axle removed from the halftrack and added to the chassis i may have to reduce the height on this one and strech the front axle a bit with this i can correct the drive hub to a central position http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...adbuild111.jpg |
RE: Ford CMP Gun Tractor build
i have sourced some fairly good wheels and tryes for these builds they are off the Tamiya FAV and are the front wheels
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...adtruck002.jpg http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...adtruck001.jpg just propped up for the moment the wheels at the rear are 90% fixed on with some leaf springs being made to have functioning suspension the fronts have the hubs being built and a new axle and fake diff along with leaf spring suspension hopefully wont be as long on the next update 8O 8O |
RE: Ford CMP Gun Tractor build
got the chassis rear axle mounts fabbed and soldered on
http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...vybuild001.jpg http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...vybuild002.jpg leaf springs made from steel pallet banding cut into strips and added the lengths together all held inplace with some heatshrink http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...vybuild004.jpg http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...vybuild005.jpg http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...vybuild006.jpg bolted on using some brass bolts and nuts fixed to the chassis using M 2.5 allen head bolts http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...vybuild008.jpg http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...vybuild007.jpg showing the suspension travel http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...vybuild010.jpg and finally with the body on http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...vybuild011.jpg all i need to do now is fabricate a front axle make some more leaf springs and get the soldering iron warmed up :O |

RE: Ford CMP Gun Tractor build
Wow! Really nice work, it's beautiful. I'm going to save this thread to a computer file for reference.
Are you going to build an ammo trailer for it? |
RE: Ford CMP Gun Tractor build
Thanks Rex From you that is one hell of a complement sir ;)
Frank does amazing work and that 25 pounder is a real work of art i have plans for the limber and is next on the list http://i418.photobucket.com/albums/p...drFieldGun.png |
RE: Ford CMP Gun Tractor build
That is truely great work.
A few noob questions if you don't mind: Is the body pasticard (styrene) or something else? What cement do you use? When you solder brass like that do you use a propane torch or do you have some super-powerful solder gun? Thanks, Russ |
RE: Ford CMP Gun Tractor build
Hi Russ
believe me im still a noob at this as well but i will tell you what works best for me the body is all plasti-card (Evergreen styrene) and i find that a product called MEK is best its a liquid solvent and applied by brush for the brasswork i use an everyday cheapo soldering iron but i use leaded fluxed solder and liquid flux best way is to "tin" both surfaces that you need to join and then place together and heat if the brass is quite thick and the soldering iron isnt man enough i have a mini blowtorch to help warm things up a bit remember to add a little more solder to wick and help the heat flow hope that helps a bit Rob |
RE: Ford CMP Gun Tractor build
The gun you made is fantastic looks great, way better than the one i made out of just parts laying around the house and a smoker motor...lol

RE: Ford CMP Gun Tractor build
these CMP's where not all Chevy's they where also built by ford of canada as well as GM the term CMP is Canadian millitary pattern trucks they where used for many platforms such as radio trucks ambulances gun carriers ammo carries troop trucks and gerneral perpose by the canadian and british forces
the long nose is Ford the short nose is chevy and from your build you are building the ford version http://bcoy1cpb.pacdat.net/cmp_canad...ry_pattern.htm |
