Deuce and a Half

Ok gents, it has officially begun. I received my Tamiya King Hauler yesterday, but due to time restrictions and the fact UPS didn't deliver it until 6:30 p.m. I didn't have time to start on it. So the first few pics are of the truck and following pics will be of some of the supplies that I picked up yesterday. This will then be updated as the build moves along. The only real problem I for-see is I wont be working from any plans, just eyeballing it, as I researched and could not find any three view drawings with some sort of scale on them (e.g. 1/35) to enlarge, I do have plenty of pics and drawings to work from though. I was going to scratch build the cab, but I think that I can use the Tamiya one and alter that, the bed I will just compare pictures of the real CCKW and work from there. This build will be detailed as much as I see fit, I am going to strive for scale-ishness< that's my own word btw. And I will try for accuracy, but not go over board. The decals I will use will most likely be ordered from ETO that are intended for a half track but will work for this build. This will also have the cloth top. alright I will add pics later as I keep getting a server error from RCU

Hi Wade,
you may want to consider getting your hands on the Tamiya Duece and a Half model in 1/35 scale. You would be able to measure the parts and convert the measurments to 1/16. Here are some photos of the finished kit I found on the web. It Is Tamiya kit number 35218. Cost maybe 20 to 30 dollars. here are some supplies for the build, the last pic is material I picked up at Michaels craft store this will make excellent scale rope for the front bumper and the tie downs for the cloth tarp.

I have an issue of RC Truck and in it is an article of using a Tamiya High-Lift and converting it to a Dodge WC-51 POWERWAGON. Although the tires used (RC4WD Rok Lox) are a little bit too large the project really impressed me. Of course, there was a lot of scratch-building done on this as well.
So, anyway, goodluck with THIS project. It won't be easy, that's for sure. :D ~ Jeff |

If you want a bit more punch, substitute the 540 with a 600 motor as I did with my Kenworth. It's a bit tight but has plenty of power for recovering tanks!

I will check the 600 out, one thing I didn't realize was that I need servo's, thought they were included as they were not listed as "required" on tower's website[&o] or I would have ordered them with the truck. Anyway small update, probably all I will do for today, need to get a better radio also. more money lol.

Also you can look at gardentrucking.com to get a 4:1 reduction. As with anything out of the box it's way too fast.

I also always put in my vote for the Turnigy 9X TX/RX from Hobbyking,whether you want to save money or not, but they have been on nearly perpetual backorder as are many of their items lately (due to factory flooding I heard.) Might be worth a check though.Also, if you need more motor power in a limited space don't forget about brushless. That and the Turnigy 9X are my two "soapbox" topics.

You may want servos with metal gears rather than standard servos. Will last longer and avoid nicking a tooth when hitting a curb!

He He...right on Eric! I just remember without the reduction, not enough torque to do anything. Yup, Willy used to carry the 4:1, that's where I got mine. As for servo's, Hitec HS-645MG is a great, cheap, high torque servo.

Remember, this is a differential system. For lots of off-road, grass, dirt, you may want locked diff.

i dont mess with cars or trucks at all but i bet you could find some drawings and views with weights and dimensions from a aircraft loading plan for military or civ planes. versions of these trucks are still used today.

After the chrome is off, my plan is to putty the holes and make new ones to look like the style of wheel that was on these.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions, I have done some more research into 4:1 reductions, and I have seen some guys use an axial transmission mated to the stock 3 speed, this gives it a 3:1 reduction and also acts as a transfer case and a tamiya ford highlift front axle is also used. Works for me since I already have an axial transmission. I could also get a gear reduction that bolts directly to the motor for around $20.00 and drop the gearing down even more or just get a lathe crawler motor. I want to atleast get some more finished before I worry about the gearing and which way I will go on that. I must add that so far this has been a fun build, I have built a boat load of tamiya's in the past and just as the others the quality and fit are second to none, but even though I still think they are slightly overpriced, that's just my opinion though. I will still continue to buy them, they are that good. I have never bought a tank from them though, and for some reason I can't justify it, even though I want one lol.

Quick little update, Haven't been able to work on my build since Tuesday, but have done some research. I downsized some dimensions and it seems the truck frame is about 3 to 4 inches too long, so I went to semi joes truckstop and picked up the globe liner rails which are almost 4 inches shorter, everything will or should still bolt right up. Also I ordered an RC4WD r2 transmission it is only single speed, I figure I will not be doing much pavement running, mostly grass and dirt so won't really need the stock 3 speed. Also it has the front and rear outputs so I can power a front axle, and it is more compact which will work out better since I am most likely going with the open cab cckw version, the only thing is the ratio is 10:1 so we shall see once it is up and running if it will be too slow. If all else fails, I will try mating the axial transmission to the stock tran's. Ok off to do some more research and maybe a little cardboard mockup for the cargo bed.
