Another Sherman build

I had a complete Tamiya Sherman upper hull spare after my easy 8 build so I thought I'd put it to good use:D

Is it a M4A1? Nice rebuild!!!

RE: Another Sherman build

It's more of an A2 I think, although I must admit I'm not a stickler for details so it will end up a mixture of variants ;)

Is it a M4A1? Nice rebuild!!!

Remember... ALL A1 Shermans had a full cast hull.

Thanks, Jeff. I am trying to learn the way of the M4 Jedi. So this would be considered an A3? I have got myself a Mato M4A1 (76) W. It has the cast hull, but I have also seen this same tank with the HVSS. What would it be? M4A1 easy 8? I am torn between rebuilding it as a M50 Super Sherman or leaving it as a WWII Sherman?

Easy 8 was the nick name given to the welded hull Sherman with the HVSS in WWII.

An A1 with HVSS is simply an M4A1E8. The Mato is the M4A1 76W.

I know it can be confusing at times but it IS my favorite tank! :D

Got a bit more done. Put a cast effect on the turret and got some more detail on the front:D

I could add if you let me do it Jeff. All the Sherman were M4, the A1,....A6 just were names received due to a change of engine.
For example A1 had radial engine, A2 diesel dual6, A3 V8 fuel...etc.
There was so many manufactures and variants that is very difficult to recognize each one. So the best way is the engine deck, to know if is A1....A6 and the suspension, then you could be close.

Jeff are right, as usual, all the A1 were cast, the Tamiya was an exception as it was a M4 105 with radial and HVSS, but the name wasn't A1 just M4 105. It was manufactured close the end of the war.

To understand about Sherman is the Hunnicut book ( a bible of more than US$400 now) but there is a cheap book if you get it, Sherman tank 1941-1945 from Almarks publications, by Chris Ellis and Peter Chamberlain 1969.

We should open a Sherman chapter here LOL. I love those horrible guy

Baby steps Mario... baby steps. :D

I only wanted to answer the questions at hand and not divulge the WHOLE Sherman history all at once. We know the suffixes dictate the engine being used, but it's a easy one to know all A1's were cast hull and all A1's had the radial engine. ;)

I just re-read this statement and it sounds confusing. The Tamiya Sherman is an M4 welded hull with HVSS and a radial engine. No A1, no other letters.

Just all A1's were cast hulls and all A1's had radial engines. :D

I have not left those Mato gearboxes in a tank long enough to see if they are any good. Have you had good luck with them?

Yes Dan, they're ok. Nice and quiet and I've had no issues with them, in fact I've only heard of one box stripping a gear in the club;)

Good to know. I still have the Pro-line Sherman to finish. Maybe I will leave them in for this. I know they are quiet, and they really scoot it along.
