SLU system

SLU Sound system is quiet interesting

Can anyone collaborate on it ?

How does it compare to the MFU ?

Upgrades ?

Downsides ?

I'm not even sure SLU is still around. I have it in my Tiran 5. It works fine, it is quirky to set up. I really had to fine tune settings to get the tank to drive straight. The controls are definitely different from Tamiya and Heng Long.

They drive excellent, very fine response. Our club is still mainly populated by slu battle tanks. The only issue lately is lack of availability, but there really is not much against them technically.

for info on the SLU.

I agree with Strato's comments about the performance, my five SLU's help populate our club;s fieldhttp://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...wink_smile.gif

The one challenge I see with them is their physical size. Not a problem for me, I like "the cats" and they fit them quite well, I have seen them in Pz III's but it takes some effort, there.

Thank you guys .

I wonder why no units for sale ?

How do they differ from Tamiya ?

Would it be possible to install it into an 8 scale tank ? Volume wise that is ?

RE: SLU system

from what I know and others can correct me the SLU has amp limits and you would draw too much power through the board with an 1/18, 1/6 or 1/10th.
Hopefully someone else can confirm this

RE: SLU system

I have misplaced my remote control for the setup. I have discovered that my T-55 is a heavy tank, I thought it was a medium tank so I never messed with it since it came programmed as a medium. Anyone know an alternate remote control that can be used to program this since they are out of stock?

RE: SLU system

My experinece if useful for somebody.
I used two years ago, big size no many options and the setup is very fragile, each time I run have to trim several times the Tx to avoid the tank runs or turns by itself. I repeated the setup process many times in the past and once you turn off for several days again have to trim very carefully to get the neutral.
I tested with Futaba 27 and 72 and Turnigy 2,4 and the same. Once trimed run well, the sound is poor.
I didn't check Clark, but Tamiya or HL don't have this behavior, make me remember the old ESCs I used for cars in the 80, when you had to trim permanentely to get neutral.
My 2cts... you know LOL

I'm not a 100% sure, but I believe you can use any universal remote (it might have to be a Sony?). You just have to code it to "033", that I know for sure. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/js/f...sn/biggrin.gif

RE: SLU system

5 My Remote has power but does not
program the tank
The remote needs to be coded:
1) Press the red key on the left bottom of
the remote controller until the indicator
light comes on.
2) Enter the code: 033 and the indicator
light will turn off.
3) test it again,

this is in the manual but you will have to figure out how to code a different remote once you get the 033 in, then there's the job of finding what botton does what on your universal remote

this is what the one from the original remote for the SLU says

I just read the manual for the SLU .

Fairly complex device .

Are they stable or need to play with most times ?

I ran a MFU and its easy , reliable

I m a bit scared of this one here .

The five that I currently operate are stable, I just run them and don't need to adjust trim, or anything to keep them functioning properly. Mine stay set up as I have left them the last time and a some of my five are into their 3rd season.

You could get a better impression of them at one of our club meets where many can be seen in use; there is nothing like seeseeing them in use and talking to long term owners, you will get a good idea of the pros and cons of them.

RE: SLU system

The manual may look scary but once you get your head around it they're fine to setup. I've ran one in my elefant and have found the ESC to be a fairly large weakness. The chips which control the elevation and traverse burn out very easily, the ESC current limit means that my elefant couldn't turn on grass despite 3:1 drop outs and speed 400 motors. There were also issues with one side powering up before the other, you could balance this with thé trims going forward but then you wouldn't run straight in reverse. Aside from this the sound on the slu is excellent and all the light functions etc work very nicely.

Easy, where abouts are you in Ontario?

The Can-Am Club is pretty spread out, there maybe some near you that can help.

RE: SLU system

Ke who fixed mine is Canada based so getting it fixed shouldn't be an issue. One of the uk members had the ESC fully tested and found it wasn't capable of the 20A output specified without burning the tracks off the pcb. This could be why they've limited the output. All I know is it feels grossly underpowered.

Ke is a member of Can-Am, so someone from the club should be able to help out.

That sucks about the under powered cause I got two of them setting on my work bench and have not seen much talk on them as of late .

It could be because I've got an earlier one, ke told me that the later ones might have fixed this so I wouldn't write yours off just yet

Will the unit handle metal tracks with a heavy tank ?

what usually burns out ? FETs ?

Anyone knows if possible to upgrade to a more current output ?
