hello all

So I'm obviously new. I used to play with a tamiya clod buster monster truck when i was little. I recently went to the tank museum in danville and loved it there. I decided to get myself an rc tank because they looked so cool. Anyone around the greensboro, nc area?

TheBennyB 09-25-2014 07:25 PM

There are a bunch of good guys in your area and the AAF museum is their home field. Their club name is H.E.A.T. Unfortunately their website isn't up at the moment but a couple of
them are on this forum. You just missed the Sept. battle weekend at the museum but don't fret, there is another in November you can check out.

BludoTheSmelly 09-25-2014 07:26 PM

I was actually at the sept battle on saturday.

TheBennyB 09-25-2014 07:37 PM

Fantastic. We're you running a tank?

cleong 09-25-2014 09:09 PM

Bludo, if you were there, I hope you had fun! If you're in Greensboro NC, short of being in Danville itself, you're one of the lucky few to actually be able to call the Danville AAF Tank Museum your home field - I had to travel well over 6,000 miles to get tracks to dirt, and I have not regretted making the trip six times now.

Now that you're thinking about getting a tank, the first thing is to get in touch with your local tanking group, pick a tank you like, get weekend passes from the Significant Other, and you're off! I can assure you, it is a slippery slope, but you'll have fun every step of the way!

Nah, i was a spectator. I have a heng long metal upgrade king tiger on the way to my house as we speak.

Is that taking the scenic route? :)

BludoTheSmelly 09-26-2014 05:48 AM

Got my king tiger and i loovvveeeee it !

BludoTheSmelly 09-26-2014 06:48 AM

Is there suppose to be an antenna on the heng long?

Rustytrax 09-26-2014 07:24 AM

Not if its the 2.4 radio.

BludoTheSmelly 09-26-2014 07:25 AM

Is their aftermarket radios to get longer range?

Green Amphibian 09-26-2014 07:28 AM

Hi BludoTheSmelly! I believe there is if you are not using a 2.4ghtz radio. Congratulations on joining the happy throng of misfits known as tankers! You will need to acquire some things if you are going to battle at the museum. You have to have a Tamyia compatible battle unit for your tank. You can get a DBC3 unit from YHR here; Battle Armor RC - Home Page.
It attaches to the control board already in your tank so you don't have to replace everything. If you are not battling, bring it with you anyway and drive when there are no battles going on. Hope to see you in Nov.

Herman

BludoTheSmelly 09-26-2014 07:29 AM

Only tamiya? Those things are too pricey!

Rustytrax 09-26-2014 07:30 AM

The problem is HL makes a crappy radio system. In order for you to use a hobby grade radio you'll need to switch to a DBC3, Clarke or some other control board.
The question really is what do want to do with your tank? Battle, backyard, or chase the pets?

And NO you can convert the HL to play. But that conversion makes it use a Tami battle like system.

Green Amphibian 09-26-2014 07:37 AM

Yes, the Tamyia units are expensive. They are the standard that HEAT and the museum uses and most other clubs too. The DBC3 will allow you to use a hobby grade radio for more range with better control, and will mate up to the Tamyia battle unit all at the same time. Like Troy said, it all depends on what you want to do with the tank. Having fun should be the first thing though!

That limits your group by excluding people that cant drop loads of money when my tank is pretty similar.

BludoTheSmelly 09-26-2014 09:19 AM

I'll get some of my friends and do my own thing, thanks.

Rustytrax 09-26-2014 09:30 AM

Ok?.... A DBC3 is $45.00 and a Battle unit from them is $35.00 if I recall. So it really isn't a giant leap in price over that 150 ish you paid for the HL. As a plus you won't end up with BBs between the paver stones of the patio either LOL. Those suck BTW.

BludoTheSmelly 09-26-2014 09:31 AM

I thought you meant buy a 900 dollar tank, my bad.

Rustytrax 09-26-2014 09:42 AM

Oh goodness NO!. Heck I love my Tamyia tanks but I have a Taigen that keeps up just fine. My HL tanks not so much. I had failures at the Idler which required and after market solution.

BludoTheSmelly 09-26-2014 09:44 AM

Mines like shutting off all of a sudden?

Rustytrax 09-26-2014 09:52 AM

I had that with the radios also. If you are to close it would shut down.

Pah co chu puk 09-26-2014 10:02 AM

It will shut down when the battery is low too.

Welcome aboard. I started with Heng Long tanks too Now I have several from several makers. The nice thing about Heng Long tanks is that they are like old Chevy's, lots of parts available and easy to work on.

BludoTheSmelly 09-26-2014 10:09 AM

I don't know a thing about fixing this stuff.

Pah co chu puk 09-26-2014 10:28 AM

You will in time. If you are close to Danville you have lots of help nearby. Ask any question you have on this forum.
