360 Hi-torque Motors in Modern Tanks (A Squad Video)
 

Hey Fellas,

Finally got a break in the rain long enough to get an outdoor test on the 99A with the 360 motors I got from evilbay and the three shaft black steel gearboxes. In my humble opinion, this is what will work best in the new HL Abrams tanks.

This is the video I did a couple weeks ago with the stock 380 motors

One cool thing about this site, you can watch two videos at once, one above the other. Set the first video at 1:10 and pause it, then set the video under it for 1:20 and if you play them both at once you can kinda get a side by side (well, over and under, anyway) comparison of the jack rabbit start on both sets of motors. You'll have to play with the timing to see them both at once but it's still a pretty cool feature.

Cool, would be interested in knowing how these motors respond in IR battling with regards to voltage drops when taking later hits. Perhaps after someone gets these installed in a battling tank they can report.

Oh man I need me some of these guys :) I'm always looking for 360 motors to play with! I'm a bit worried they are only 6V motors, but they should be fine, those darn brushed motors last forever.

I'm not sure those are the same, because of the 28,000 rpm. The ones I have are supposed to be 12,500 rpm. Erik sent me some links to good reference charts from Mabuchi and I found there's many different motors labeled RS360SH. The ones I was looking for are RS360SH-2885, but I don't think that's what I have here. I wanted the 2885s because they're supposed to have 71 gpc of torque, and that's the best I could find. I believe the motors I have aren't producing as much torque as the 2885s would, but I still haven't learned enough about the subject. Is there an electric motor guru in the house? :)

One more thing - the site says the terminal marked with the red dot is positive, but you need to hook the black wire from the MFU to that terminal, or your tank will run backwards. :)

I've found it's better to solder as instructed and just swap the plugs on the MFU board. For example, my left motor on my rear-sprocket drive is plugged into the right spot on the MFU and the right motor into the left spot (per the MFU's markings). The MFU seems to compensate for needing to run the two motors in opposite directions when driving.

That's what I did with these, so now what should be positive has a black wire and what should be negative has a red wire. I soldered the red wire to the red dot and the tank ran backwards, so I switched the wires in the plug and now it runs like it should.

Man your 99A hauls ass now. I only have ww2 tanks but seeing your videos makes me want to get a more modern tank and install a set of these. Thank for sharing!

I buy mine from the local Harbor Freight so next time I go I'll get the correct size ones for everyone. I get the multi-packs but I believe they are the are in the 5-6mm range. Works great for brushed motors. I'm trying to get them on the new gearboxes too :)

That would be cool! Do they take up any extra space compared to soldering?

It is minimal. On the 3:1 and 4:1 gearboxes there is plenty of room to spare. The dual ratio gearboxes however might require you to bend tabs a bit on the motors. No biggie, I do it with all mine. It is nice to be able to swap out so quickly!

Are you putting those spade connectors right on the motor tabs? What about the caps for EMI? Don't they get in the way?

If you solder the caps close enough to the motor it doesn't effect them at all :)
