Gearbox questions..
What would be the best steel gearbox for the HL Panzer lll? I would like one with ball bearings.
The stock zinc ones are garbage. Thanks! |
Imex/Taigen will have some good gear boxes for the Panzer III with bearings on each gear shaft and the drive shaft. They will have steel gears as well. Erik when will these be in?:o
|
Thanks MAUS45 for the info! I will wait and see if Erik will have some good news.
|
I'll bet he says april.
|
I just hope they have bearings and not bushings.
|
They do. Right now the only way to get them is to buy an Abrams.
|
No modern tanks for this guy lol... I will see what the release date is when Erik pop's up
|
Hobby Raw has steel gears with bearings but they are the 3 shaft version. Good for a modern talk but way to quick for WWII For a WWII tank you should really go for the 4 shaft gears. Mato 2.0 will work in a PZIII. I use them in all my Shermans. Wathersons has the same set up except they are painted black.
|
The steel gears right now with bushings in a 3:1 M/L config is available as part TAG120267. However the ones with bearings are as the cheater Max-U52 says (he asked me earlier! :) ) they will be in around April. I'm trying to plan for a delay from Chinese New Years as there always is one, I just haven't heard it yet :)
The new gears with bearings will be a TAG14xxx number. I'll update you all as they get close, I have a ton to swap for as well. Remember I have a pretty large stable of tanks myself... |
Ok thanks Erik! I will keep my eyes peeled.
|
NP! Don't worry I'll make sure everyone knows when they are coming. I worked hard on making sure they are shimmed working smooth. The added color was a bonus too, I was just joking when I said all black but it sure looks a ton better IMO.

Edited: I was bein' an educated donkey. These are the only three shaft black steel boxes with bearings that I know of. The only boxes I know of with bearings at the gearshafts are 4 shaft boxes. |
Max-U52 these are not the ones Erik is talking about. They will be all black and have a TAG14XXX number. Unless I'm on glue??

Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean you're not on glue. The jury's still out. They found me guilty years ago.

And it just occurred to me that Dan was the only one that tried to answer your original question, which are best for the PIII. I have the mato all metal PIII with the stock brass boxes and the HL PIII Tauchpanzer with Imex 3 shaft black steel boxes. Both are airsoft. Both run great. The mato is much closer to scale speed and the brass gearboxes are seriously smooth. It will coast a couple of feet from full throttle! The HL is very quick but it's on Imex electronics and it runs like a dream. I just went to 4 shaft in the PIV and I like them much better than the 3 shaft I took out. Nowhere near as fast, but much more realistic.
|
Hobby Raw has 3 shaft gear boxes with steel gears and bearings on all the shafts. I run this in my Leopards and they are very smooth. A little too fast for a WWII tank.
I'll be more clear on what I wanted to know. Is Taigen bringing out steel four shaft gear boxes with bearings on all the shafts.? This would be sweet for WWII armor. If we are talking about steel 3 shaft gearboxes with bearings all around, then as I mentioned, Hobby Raw has those already if you don't want to wait. |
I was told that yes, the new gearboxes will have bearings on all shafts, will be four shaft and available in both 48 and 58mm shaft lengths. I'll also be watching for any clearance sales on the boxes with bushings at the gearshafts. Those are still just fine for light tanks, so I'm hoping once the "all bearing" boxes are available vendors will want to get rid of old stock for a good price. Yeah, I'm a cheap buzzard.
I didn't know about the hobby raw boxes, thanks for that. I have black steel 3 shaft in the 99A right now but they have bushings on the gearshafts so I might want to get a set of "all bearing" boxes for that, and I'll eventually get an Abrams and want 3 shaft in that as well. The 4 shaft that come with the Abrams will go in a different tank, and I have plenty that need them. :) |
Ok quick rundown of the new gearboxes coming.....
H/L 3:1 (3 shaft) 48mm and 58mm versions H/L 4:1 (4 shaft) 48mm and 58mm versions M/L 3:1 (3 shaft) 48mm and 58mm versions L/L 5:1 (3 shaft, but 5 reductions) 48mm and 58mm (delayed a bit longer, I had to make all new molds for these. Do not buy the current steel ones from other vendors as they will not perform well at all. The bearings were not installed and the bushings left in by mistake and the EU vendors bought them to sell. With heavier gears and the same motor performance will not be optimal.) These will be the new all bearing version steel gearboxes coming soon. Bearings will be available on every reduction gear and the final drive shaft as well. NO SHIMMING will be needed on these gearboxes, there is no lateral play in them. The new numbers will be something like TAG14000/14005/14010 etc. I haven't added them to the system yet so I dont have the exact numbers, but they will come in very nice new boxes. |
Sweet well sounds like I'm going to be throwing some more money at Imex to outfir my tanks with them sweet, sweet, bearing gear boxes.;) What does hobby mean again. Ohh that right more money needed!

Good Thread!
Clears up a number of questions for me. I'll be moving the New Gearboxes from my HL Abrams into my Taigen KV1 as we managed to kill a Zink Gearbox in it this past week. it was Too Fast anyway, which I think contributed to the death of the Zink Gears in such a Beefy Metal Bruiser. The Abrams will be coming apart for Mods/Upgrades anyway... The new 3 Shaft Steel Gearboxes sound like Just The Thing for it. Thank You for Great Info! -gus |
No problem guys! Once again I'll make sure more info is posted as time gets closer ok? I made sure to carry all the options for the steel gearboxes this time so every mount position will be available. The L/L dual ratio gearboxes will be released later so bear with me there please. It will be worth the wait as the molds are being remade and the motors will be changed as well to accommodate the larger rotating mass from the brass->steel conversion.

Awesome sauce!! Erik all I will need is a gear box set for the Heng Long Pzlll. I want as close to scale speeds with bearings and steel gears. I'm waaaay to new to RC tanks to know everything yet.... But I will be ready to order what you recommend as soon as you have them for sale.
Thanks again!! |
