Your first tank

hi everyone thought i would just ask a simple two part question because i really want to know.

What was your first tank? (I.E.) M4A3 Sherman US. Not brand or size.

Why did you want that tank as a opposed to others. (I.E.) I wanted a American tank that is well known and even though it had it's down side during WWII it still managed to prove itself not only in combat but in manufacturing and variants.

Thats it. make your answers as long or short as you want. and enjoy. I know I will

King Tiger - I thought this is the baddest and meanest looking tank during its heyday.

Bagheera 03-02-2015 05:59 PM

Started with the HL Tiger 1 in 05 and it was Hoverboy on RCGroups that got me started on fixing the problems with the Tiger. You have too start somewhere. And now I have 19 tanks. Planning to make a battle field in the basement and try to start a club.

Mine was the LVTP-7 that I scratch built, first one to buy and battle was a Tiger 1. The LVTP-7 was because I had served with them in the Marine Corps and nobody was, or is, making them around here.

My first tank is ZTZ-99 I think. It's a toy grade actually but this is when I learned a lot about RC tank, the available upgrades & the existence of 3rd party electronics (Clark's TK22 & EL MOD).

Mine was the Panzer MK IV F2, I just liked the way it looked.

I bought my first r/c tank in 1991 while stationed on Okinawa. It's a Tamiya King Tiger with clutch drive and I still have it (but it has been upgraded.) I bought it because it was the ONLY r/c tank in the Japanese hobby shop available at that time.

Started with a Radio Shack toy version of an M1A1 some 15 years ago.

And to date only it has never had a breakdown or any need for 'upgrades'.

MTmags 03-03-2015 07:07 AM

I just started with a Heng long Panzer lll.

The first toy tank from the early 1950s was a West German Gama Windup Tank, a gift from an uncle, which I could never windup, typical German tank. The first rc tank, a Tamiya Tiger IE, bought used, assembled though unpainted. Bought it off eBay after I saw my first infrared tank battle at the 2004 TamiyaCon in Southern California. The Tiger was later rebuilt, upgraded with almost every aftermarket performance item possible (gear reduction, 400 black can motors, all the Daryl Turner metal parts, bearings, scale 88mm metal barrel and other misc stuff). Prior, to rc tanks I had been interested in reading about WWII, including the German Panzer's and their combat tactics, so getting a Tiger model worked for me.

My first tank was a 1/32 scale Monogram Panzer IV H. That is what started my addiction to WWII armor. My first remote controlled tank was a 1/35 scale Tamiya Stug III G. It had three feet of wires going from the tank to the control box.

My first true remote control tank was the Tamiya 1/16 scale Sherman with the twin motor clutch drive system. It didn’t even have turret rotation. I bought it when they first came out in 1975. Still have it. ;)

My 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] r/c tank was a 1/16 Tamiya Tiger II with improved single motor clutch drive system. It had turret rotation and a gun flash, but no elevation or gun recoil. I think it came out in 1982? Nothing like the Tamiya full option kits we have today.

My first full option kit was the Tamiya 1/16 Tiger 1. It was the first full option kit with sound, turret rotation, gun elevation and recoil. I think it came out in 1998? All I know is that it was the only full option kit at the time. Mine was a 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] generation kit with improved all metal gearboxes as the 1[SUP]st[/SUP] generation gearboxes had a brass/nylon gear mix. :p

Wow now I feel old after reading this.:cool:

My first RC tanks were a series of Radio Shack Tandy sorry examples of armor wannabees. The electronics were faulty, ie.would stop working all of a sudden for no reason. The tracks were natural gum rubber and would fall off running straight across the room. Very frustrating for a young kid crazy about tanks! You can imagine my joy when I bought and built my first 1/16 Tamiya King Tiger. It was like landing on the Moon!

First tank was a dinky 1/35th scale Tamiya M1 Abrams with cable operated remote.

First real RC tank was a Tamiya Pershing - the local field at the time had an overwhelming majority of German tanks and I didn't feel like adding to the numbers.

I purchased more Tamiya tanks in the following order: Tiger I, Leopard 2A6, Panther and KV-1.

afv aficionado 03-03-2015 06:45 PM

Don't recall my first tank, but my first 1/35th tank was a Tamiya M41 with cable remote control, and my first 1/25th tank , Tamiya 1/25 Centurion with cable remote control. My parents brought them back from Singapore in 1978, my father being there doing a stint as a umpire with the NZ Infantry Battalion. My first HL was an M26 Pershing, which was supposed to be a M41 present for my father, who served in them 1960-1971. One of the perils of shopping with Raidentech.
Went on to purchase more M41's, and another M26 - it too was supposed to be a M41 - but not Raidentech this time - and have just rec'd a Taigen M41, now up to 7, plus bits...

This was my second, my first was the MOBAT back in 1984! I accidently left the C batteries in too long and they leaked which ruined the crude electronics. I bought a replacement off Ebay for my boys a few years ago.

Me too!! Still have the Mobat laying around somewhere, along with the original and anniversary H.I.S.S.

I remember my very first Radio Shack M4 Sherman, maybe 1980 ish.

I tried my own Hop-Up with more batteries for faster speed and burned it up. LOL

And I still have burned some electronics like Tamiya MF units messing around. LOL

Cold Comfort 03-04-2015 07:14 AM

I believe it was the first thing I ever purchased off ebay.

Hi. My First and Only tank so far is the Taigen Sherman. I purchased this tank as a tribute to my father who was a Heavy Motor Mechanic attached to the 356th Harbor Craft Co. which was part of Patton's 3rd Army. He arrived in Normandy shortly after D Day and was stationed in Rouen France. Like many WWII Vets, he never talked about his time in theater, but I suspect he worked on the Shermans and other vehicles. He may or may not have participated in the Bastogne operation, but as you know that was kind of an emergency all hands on deck operation, and detailed unit records are hard to find. I also wanted to pay tribute to all of the brave Sherman tankers that made the ultimate sacrifice fighting the superior German Tanks. I am Not a skilled modeler, and cannot do the the kinds of detailed Mods that many of the expert RCU Members produce. I have done some painting and decaling and expect to post my finished project in a few weeks.

phrogjlf 04-24-2015 08:40 PM

Never had a model of one, but my 1st tank was an M60A3 and my second one was an M1A1...

If I can find proper plans, I hope the build an M41 Walker Bulldog from scratch, add some upgrades and hopefully build one large enough to go play in.
