RichJohnson 06-22-2015 07:07 AM

Ah, I have a Nick set like that.
Must have been some work to relsope the glacis to 60 degrees.
you should post photos of that project. I would like to see that process.

It's actually not too bad...just cut the front to the correct angle, plate it back up and build off that...

Great work. Got any more pictures building up the hatche?
is that a HL turret modified gun mount and coupola or is it a taigen turret?

fynsdad 06-23-2015 09:13 AM

Didn't take any more pics I'm afraid....The turret is a std HL one. Ive cast the mantlet and hatch in resin, filled the loaders hatch and reprofiled the rear....

Tell Fyn I said thank you for not putting camo paint on the logs.

And give that young man a raise. He gets better with every project. :)

fynsdad 06-24-2015 11:02 AM

Just noticed on the DVD that the tank I'm doing is actually "Murder Inc" not "Old Phyllis"....who says I don't do accuracy...LOL

Does Fyn have any more photos of how he did the canvass top on that halftrack?

And I still think you shouldn't have painted the logs. I just can't see a TC letting his crew paint the tank without dropping those off first. I know the movie tank is like that, but you already know you can't trust Hollywood to get it right.

Max-U52 06-26-2015 05:20 AM

Not Hollywood

fynsdad 06-26-2015 05:23 AM

I don't know so much...I've seen squaddies who have been told to paint their landrover paint EVERYTHING....including not only the tools but the canvas straps securing them...lol
As to the halftrack, the covers just PVA'ed cloth over a framework...

Now thats the first time I have noticed cammo like the moive on a period photo.
still wish the movie had used a tank like the photo of fury instead of and E8. It would have made their statements of hisotry together and the way they fought the tiger make sense.

Ex_Pat_Tanker 06-26-2015 08:48 AM

Camo was very much a unit specific thing - 3rd and 14th Armoured Divisions were very into black overspray (possibly the 10th as well), other divisions didn't bother. Even within the divisions, individual battalions sometimes did things their own way - best example is the 8th over painting its stars with darker paint, while its sister units the 37th and 35th didn't.

Max-U52 06-26-2015 09:09 AM

I know camo was different from unit to unit, and they tended to spray first and ask questions later, but I've still never seen an actual photo with painted logs and unless I do I have to believe that it's a Hollywood thing.

And that halftrack looks great, Frank. I really like the armor screen for the windshield. Great work.

fynsdad 06-26-2015 09:17 AM

To be honest Im not sure how common logs were used as applique armour...I can only recall seeing one or two pics of Shermans with them "fitted". Still, gives the build the right look.....

Max-U52 06-26-2015 09:20 AM

I think that's mainly what counts. When you build a tank you have to be happy with the results and if you like it that's all that matters.

Green Amphibian 06-26-2015 09:56 AM

The logs did offer some improvement to the armor, but were used and carried as unditching devices.
