One of these days(maybe christmas) I want to get a halftrack. What brands make decent ones? It probably won't get run much but I don't want something that will break every time I take it out either. My grandfather was a tech on a halftrack crew in WW2 so it will probably get get made to look good and sat on a shelf with a photo I have of him from early in his military service. Would just be cool to take it out now and again.

The only rc US half track is made by Torro.
You pretty much have to order one from Bob the Commander to get one that aint thrashed by the time it comes to you.
he is the only importer into the US. If you buy from euproe, its gonna get broke in transit.

They are not fragile, I have driven mine alot and in fact stepped on it once during a chisel incident... Only cracked the bumper screw hole.
His price is ballpark is 250-300 i cant say exactly. He orders a crate at a time and you get it when it comes in. He tests them all out and makes sure they work, if there is damage he repairs with factory supplied parts.
Cant get any better than that. He is just slow on email when hes running around.

I was lucky and found both of mine on eBay 2 years ago for $120.00 each... brand new in the box and not damaged either.

So one is stripped down right now being turned into a "T19" like Kelly's Heroes vehicle and depending on the tandem rear axle cost, this project. :confused:

Wouldn't it be great if a GMC was available? You could cut off the bed and put it on the half track front end. Then you could put the rear end of the half track on the GMC cab ---- Why not :confused:

I can't wait to see the T19. You already know mine had the guns removed to make the M41AA Walker Bulldog (Antiaircraft Variant) craziness. I'm not kidding about the truck. I've never done a group build before, but I'm game if you are. Have you disassembled yours enough to get an idea of what the frame will be capable of? Maybe scratchbuild a new frame? Aluminum maybe?

And I got mine about two years ago on Ebay and paid twice that, you lucky dog. My wallet hates you. :)

Couldn't you just do one drive axle and one dummy? I think I also saw someone use a Torro halftrack and one of the 1/18th scale M16s to make a scout car?

I don't know what the wheelbase and axle width is of these, but if you can fit SCX10 axles under it I can show you how to make a pass through center axle if it helps.

I am so tempted. This has a lot of possibilities as a staring platform. Wheels and tires are the big draw back.
He also has the open cab, and the Dodge 1 1/2 and 3/4 ton WCs. Could get a real convoy going. How about that WC55 with the 57mm AT in it. that would be neat.

I'd be very careful considering any of those tin offerings on eBay. The example shown is most likely the BEST one they have to take photos of because if you look very close, the windshield trim is not on straight at all.

These remind me of those tin cars and trucks... airplanes and boats that places like Michaels and World Bazaar offer. Might look good from a distance but up close you wouldn't want to sneeze in their direction as they would make a very poor platform for RC and MIGHT pass as a dust queen.

I thought about the Scout Car direction but a single axle truck does nothing for me being almost JEEP-like. I also want to get the Trumpeter kit to allow some detailing to the truck such as an opening hood and movable parts/features.

I think those 1/10 axles are probably too big - Off the top of my head the wheel back to back dimension is around 3" on those Torro half-tracks.

After looking around I may need to seek a different supplier as just the Tamiya gear (which is most likely too wide) on eBay is not really cost effective and I think looking at a toy RTR might be my best avenue. They do make 4X4 toy trucks!!

AND... while in the neighborhood I want to also look into powering the front axle making it a 4X4 or a 6X6 and this could get a bit salty in a hurry. 3 axles/rearends, driveshafts and a transfer-case... plus most likely a different motor and ECU is pretty obvious.

Either that or just buy a Tamiya tractor as a donor and get that Dragon Wagon resin cab kit? :cool:

Measure up mine - 3.5" back to back, which is exactly the same as the Asiatam Opel Blitz axles (I'm guessing the White company used a standard front axle design from the same folks who supplied GM?).

Could Ryan's SCX10 mod be made to work with these? The end caps of the diff housings are separate pieces, so in theory somebody could cast up a new part to hold a bearing and second pinion to drive a rear axle?

The Asiatam ones wouldnt work because they are split in halves the wrong way.

Obviously not cheap, but they will last. Like many have told me about Tamiya, you get what ya pay for, and these are worth the money.

65e isn't too far off the Asiatam price, seems quite reasonable if that includes our extortionate EU mandated sales tax.
