Tamiya King Tiger 1:16 Issues
 

Hi all, as a newcomer to the forum please accept my apologies if this has been answered before but i didn’t see anything after doing a search.
I bought my King Tiger last year ready built ready to run, it came with an old 35 mhz Futaba ripmax radio/receiver combo and very recently i decided to upgrade to a 2.4 ghz system (Planet T5) but the Planet T5 combo i bought i didn’t like as it would power the tank on but not power down, you had to do this manually via the switch under the turret, my problem is when i revered back to the Futaba 35 mhz system as soon as the tank roars into life via the radio all that happens is the turret motor engages and no other functions work, accept the switchable headlight i fitted last year via the 5th channel, is there a master reset i need to press? I’ve tried reprogramming the channels as per the manual.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you've got a radio (tx or rx) problem. Have you tried verifying your radio works outside of the tank? You might try to plug in a 4.8v battery pack into the "batt" plug on the rx, and then put a servo on each channel, one at a time, to verify the channels work.

Cheers for the advice Jeff489, will give that a try, just strange how everything worked fine before the swap.

You may also want to do a reset on the DMD.

Hi DaveBcool, i did try follow the instructions on page 19 of the manual firstly, the lights all flashes as they should but still the turret engages upon start up with nothing else working, will try dissconecting the turret motor , drive motors and flash and try again.

I suggest you start by assuming everything is broken, until you prove it works.

Start with your batteries. Make sure they are serviceable, and fully charged. If so, proceed to the next step.

Next perform the radio function check as I mentioned above (outside of the tank). If everything works, proceed to the next step.

Next, install the RX back into the tank. Check your DMD plugs (that run from the DMD to the rx) in the RX. When they are flipped 180 degrees (yes...it's possible to jam them in upside down), the tank will do very odd things. Verify that they are all plugged in properly. Unplug the MF unit from the DMD (pull out the communication cable). Reconnect the battery, and turn power on. Check to see if the tank works with just the DMD connected (the DMD is just a dual speed control that interfaces with an MF unit. The DMD will run the tank's motors all by itself (not much else though...)). The tank should drive around. If everything works, proceed to the next step. Power down and reconnect the MF to power and the tank's various controls. Next, run a self check on the MF. (the "self check" cycle makes sure the MF is functioning proper). Refer to your DMD operation manual for how to do this. If everything works, problem solved. If any one step fails, you've found a problem.

Remember, it's most likely going to be a battery issue, radio (tx or rx) issue, or a DMD issue. Verify each one works independently to find the one.

Once again many thanks for your help Jeff489, got a spare hour or so tonight so going to try your suggestions, fingers crossed its not the DMD!
