Random Question

Anyone converted a taigen sturmtiger over? Wonder how you can get it to battle since it doesn't really have a barrel.

Rustytrax 06-09-2016 06:20 AM

The ones I have seen have the emmitter in the barrel in a tamiya holder or a brass tube. That way it was able to be aimed and it met the requiremnets for depth..

Interesting info :)

Here's a thought: Perhaps some machines aren't appropriate for tank-tank combat??

Bathroom signs shouldn't need to be redefined either but some people need to be different....

Would be interesting to see.

The Sturm was a mobile artillery piece designed to knock down buildings. Large, immobile objects that could be sighted from a distance and hit with a healthy arc of the projectile. Things that heavy don't fly straight like an 88 round, I would think if faced with another tank, a Strum crew would abandon if they couldn't escape.

Still RC we're not all that realistic though :)

Tanque 06-09-2016 08:58 AM

No much in the way of video on this machine..

I know i've seen lots of videos on youtube on various tanks.

As Rusty stated, most I've seen have the emitter in a correct size tube centered in the "barrel." One joker even tried running his as IFA, that got shot down pretty quickly via
self policing at the Danville battlefield. Figure a Sturmtiger is no different than a Hummel or Sherman 105 on the field. Sure the Hummel and 105 were more easily used in a direct fire scenario but not much is realistic when it comes to IR battling anyways.

Panther F 06-09-2016 09:13 AM

I have the Imperial Models resin set on my Tamiya Tiger and I simply drilled the bottom of the barrel to accept that diameter of tubing for the emitter and installed the flash underneath it.

Never got a chance to use it though. Some clubs and rules say that it's not a battle tank but still allow the 105 Sherman to play at the same time so whatever. It's still an armored vehicle and I built it 'just because' and not to battle it anyway. ;)

Better than seeing a bazillion tiger 1's and shermans on the battlefield all the time.

Ex_Pat_Tanker 06-09-2016 09:20 AM

I converted my old Mato Sturmtiger to El-Mod many moons ago, haven't used it in years due to the traverse being busted (and it has the original Mato 'race spec' gearboxes fitted as well!) but it was built to pass inspection at Danville should the need ever have arisen.

Originally I tried to keep the airsoft mechanism and have the IR mounted below it, but the low mounted tube you can see in the pictures didn't work out so well in testing and so I ripped out the mechanism and put the emitter down the centre instead.

I think one of the DAK crew has a repainted Russian captured version they battle, so I'm not alone in my madness...

BludoTheSmelly 06-09-2016 09:22 AM

I like it :)

Panther F 06-09-2016 09:34 AM

That's basically how mine looks!

10 years ago when I ran with the MACV group they allowed the Sturmtiger to run as an IFV... being that it had 150MM of frontal armor (80MM or more qualifies for a heavy) simply to open up the tanks on the battlefield. I mean, at the time there was only the WECOHE Jagdtiger and the IMAI Elefant to use as such and you had to have deep pockets for either.

But I guess the Sturmtigers reload time and the fact it's a rocket disqualifies it, then should too the 105 Sherman as it COULD be used against armor, but realistically now... really? I've read the ballistic tests of what a 105 shell can do. LOL

BTW... I wouldn't send a Hummel out as a battle tank! LOL

I guess this falls into the "game" side of this HOBBY. I can tell you DAK has had 3 Different Sturm Tigers over the years and they obviously are IFA and a royal pain to fight! We kid the operators that we should put 6 emitters in the barrel to simulate the "spread" and only let them fire 11 times during the whole event. The reality is to battle with it you need to spin the tank a bit and flank it a lot. Eventually it throws a track and you can kill it.

IFAs have their place but I'd really like to see more elephants..

The only real equalizer is more allied TDs come on Chaffee / Hellcat / M10!

Tanque 06-09-2016 01:51 PM

I trust you guys know I have nothing against the ST. I have two of them; 1 each in 1/16 and 1/10. I gutted the Mato version some years back and recently I've been rethinking that.
I need to purchase metal tracks for it and I'll likely put in an IBU.

If I was a Sturmtiger commander my tactic would be to sneak up behind Allied tanks and shoot them in the butt at zero elevation from 50 feet away. I think that would really hurt.

Panther F 06-09-2016 04:06 PM

I was just stating an opinion, not starting an argument or a rules change... just an opinion.

I mean it IS only just a game. In reality a Sherman stands NO CHANCE against a Tiger. It should only take one hit from a Tiger and game over for the Sherman.

But it wouldn't hurt to stretch some things out... especially if it's sold or produced in 1/16. ;) (JMO)

Well, and then you could always go the Paper Panzer route and rebuild it as a Jagdsturmtiger with an 88mm gun in a modified mantlet. That would make it REALLY hard to drive in a town, though!

Oh that would probably hurt Rex.

TheBennyB 06-09-2016 07:58 PM

All depends on what your into.....heyoooh.

Panther G 06-12-2016 05:21 PM

Not much video or pictures on these because they only made twenty of them in the first place, and they would not have been used in direct combat with tanks. as has been said they are a mobile artillery unit, so not even classified as a tank as it does not have a turret or a gun. It is a rocket launcher.
